How Often Should Texans Replace Their AC Filters?

Cedar fever is a real problem in Central Texas. Millions of Texans suffer through “allergy season,” which seems to be getting longer and more intense every year. Mountain cedar trees release pollen into the air, resulting in allergic reactions. In the great outdoors, we can’t control the air we breathe. We can, however, improve our indoor air quality at home. Replacing your AC filters regularly could be one of the most effective ways to combat cedar fever.

How Often Should I Replace My AC Filters In Central Texas?

Given the high degree of air pollutants in Austin and San Antonio, TX, regular AC filter replacement is strongly recommended. There are two types of AC air filters you need to replace.

A “media filter” is usually 4-5” thick and it is located by your system itself. For most Austin and San Antonio, TX residents it can be found in the attic. There is only one of these filters connected to your system. We advise Texans to replace their media filter every 6 months. Make sure your HVAC system is switched off when replacing the media filter.

“Grille filters” are usually 1” thick and they are located in multiple places around the home. To replace these filters, unlatch the air vent screen and lower it gently. Next, simply remove the old filter and slide the new one into place. We recommend you replace grille filters every month.

Benefits Of Replacing AC Filters

One of the simplest and most effective ways to improve your indoor air quality is to replace your HVAC air filters. A Radiant technician can do this simple swap during an HVAC maintenance visit or if you’re up for it, you can replace the filters yourself. Regular AC maintenance is advised as it can greatly increase the lifespan of your system.

Fresh AC filters around the house will reduce the amount of pollutants in your indoor air. Air flows through the filters and removes airborne contaminants, effectively preventing them from entering your home. This can help reduce allergy and asthma symptoms.

Dirty air filters can strain your system and even reduce its longevity. Obstructed airflow results in the buildup of heat. This can cause your AC to cycle on and off, also known as short cycling. By replacing your AC air filters regularly, you can prevent costly repairs down the line.
