Nostalgia can be the ground of creativity—a potent force that fuels our imagination and shapes our artistic endeavors. In childhood, we find ourselves drawn to worlds of fantasy and novelty, where heroes and villains collide in epic battles and dreams burn bright. One such novelty exists in fandom, a community where fans come together to share their love for beloved franchises. This community endures inspiration, guiding us back to the stories and characters that ignited our passion in youth. Santi Obcena pays homage to the nostalgic roots of our lives, circling back to adulthood where catching ’em all still holds a special place in our hearts.

With the idea of Pokémon as the central theme for the barong, the MEGA YDC alum embroiders a playful homage to childhood dreams and pop culture iconography. This icon? Charmander, of course.

Roots Before Rockets

“It’s something that the groom has been interested in for the longest time,” Obcena reflects. “Since he was a kid, he’s been a big Pokémon fan. I’m also a big Pokémon fan. So I said, let’s play with this.” And play they did. With the enthusiasm of trainers, Charmander’s flame flickered to life. As the design blazed into existence, it ignited memories of childhood wonder and feelings of adulthood nostalgia. 

While not the first, Obcena acknowledges other designers who have specifically gone into embroidery of the traditional garment. RJ Santos of Randolf has practiced this method in his own ways, incorporating themes of missed connections, heartbreak, and even some 1950s diner aesthetics. The Barong tagalog is traditional, and perhaps the idea of nostalgia through embroidery is a prevalent theme. 

“We never anticipated it going viral,” Obcena muses with a hint of surprise. “But then with every project that we do for clients, it’s always a personal thing.” He notes that many people, including himself, continue to engage in different aspects of the Pokémon franchise, such as playing Pokémon Go, a mobile augmented reality game, or exploring other games like Pokémon Unite, Sword and Shield, or the Legends of Arceus. Despite their initial expectations, they never anticipated that the interest in Pokémon would reach such unprecedented levels, such in the case of fashion and tradition.

But don’t underestimate the power of fandom—connections can often feel fleeting, but the bond forged through shared passions is something extraordinary. The realization hit him like a bolt of lightning—this shared love for Pokémon ran deeper than imagined. “We never thought it would go this far,” he confesses. What had started as a fascination, had blossomed into a phenomenon.

From Foundations to Fireworks

It’s all about finding the right balance. Obcena still honors the foundational elements of Filipiniana, such as using classic fabrics like piña and cocoon, as he also incorporates modern techniques like hand-guided machine embroidery to encounter contemporariness. “I wanted it to be a marriage of the old and then the new. I still want it to look like a barong. I don’t want it to look like anything else,” he says.

For Obcena, his designs lie in their capability to reflect the wearer’s personality. “Basically it’s still the barong that you know and love but it has more gravity to it because the embroidery that’s featured on the barong that you’re wearing is something that you actually like, something that represents you,” he shares. He highlights the joy of incorporating pop culture references, such as Pokémon, into his designs, noting, “In this case, with Pokémon, it basically represents a lot of people’s childhood. It’s just really fun. It takes out the seriousness in it being the Filipiniana.”

Innovation with Integrity

Obcena acknowledges the challenges that arise, particularly through copyright issues. “I don’t own the characters for Pokémon because they’re basically owned by Niantic and Nintendo,” he explains candidly. Despite this hurdle, Obcena remains committed to his principle of never mass-producing his designs. Each piece is crafted as a one-of-a-kind creation, ensuring the exclusivity of his work.

“Part of our principle in doing all of these custom embroidery is that we never mass-produce anything,” he affirms. “Everything is basically hand-drawn.” In the case of his Pokémon-embroidered barong, Obcena took on the task of redrawing iconic characters like Charizard and Charmeleon, adding his unique touches to the design, including curly queues and fire aspects. 

Through creation, Obcena shuns the notion of finality, yearning instead for a dynamic assemblage of ideas through creative collaboration. He integrates the client’s vision with his manifestations. This approach allowed for a fluid exchange of ideas, textures, and figures, resulting in a design that was greater than the sum of its parts, and each element enhanced the other to form a cohesive whole. It’s almost like an evolved Pokémon itself.

Old Flames, New Horizons

Obcena emphasizes the importance of understanding the foundations of design before venturing into new territories. He believes that while innovation is essential, it must be grounded in a deep appreciation for the techniques and practices that have come before. However, this reverence for tradition does not equate to rigid adherence to outdated norms. He encourages new designers to push the boundaries of creativity while still paying homage to their roots. 

“When you’re trying to innovate on something, you have to know where it’s coming from, why it happened that way, how people made it that way. So before stepping into the future, you have to know how it was done in the past,” Obcena explains. He adheres that as long as innovations respect the essence of tradition, there are no limits to the artistic freedom one can explore. “Because after that, you can go as crazy as you want, as far as you want with the idea. As long as it doesn’t break it to the point that you cannot recognize it anymore.”

Tradition often takes itself too seriously, and Obcena reminds us to explore the fiery side of design. With his Pokémon-embroidered barong, he celebrates Filipino heritage with a flame of whimsy and a spark of nostalgia. Nostalgia can be the root of creativity, and its execution can bring to life the acceptance of the present. And as the internet continues to buzz over his creations, Santi Obcena is a designer who knows how to catch ’em all—attention, admiration, and maybe even a Charmander or two.

Pachara “Peach” Chirathivat has been a household name in the entertainment scene for the past decade. Growing up in front of the cameras and under the scrutiny of the public eye, Peach has branched out into all the creative walks of life—performing, acting, creating musical scores, and building various entrepreneurial ventures. Always on the lookout for a business opportunity, Peach brought Filipino favorite Potato Corner to Thailand and made it his country’s own. But as a businessman and an actor, how does he toe the balance between the two in Netflix’s The Believers—a project that requires him to tap into those two facets of his life? Peach tells MEGA Man all about it in an exclusive interview.

Taking on the Project

The Believers, which explores questions of faith, money, and societal issues, quickly soared to the top of Thailand’s TV ratings in just one week after its debut. The series tackles the commercialization of religion, particularly Buddhism, which some may find inappropriate or controversial. However, at yesterday’s press conference, Peach, who plays the role of Game, says, “We have to talk about how to make religion more transparent. We have to show them what happens when people exploit faith, when people corrupt the whole system apart. Now, we can start raising the question of how we can make things better.”

The fresh new perspective emerges in The Believers—shifting the focus on profit-driven dynamics within a religious institution. “I got hooked,” Peach admits when asked about taking on the project. “Only a few films or shows about temples get approved to screen in Thailand; it’s really rare. I figured—I should be a part of it. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

Viewed from a broader perspective, the series offers an engaging social commentary on how religion can exploit the vulnerable.  Its examination of the intricacies of faith from a Buddhist perspective sets it apart. While faith is typically a source of comfort and hope, The Believers shows how readily it may be used for one’s own gain, and it does so in a compelling narrative. “You’re supposed to create a kind of tension [between the series and the audience],” Peach says. “That’s the whole point.”

Working as Game

When asked about delving into his character, Game, Peach tells MEGA Man, “The challenging part was toeing the line between portraying him as a jerk but with substance—because that’s who he is,” he states. “That’s what made things really fun. I had to work more towards what’s underneath the layers behind his façade, behind the interpersonal level.”

A Balance of Buisness and Art

With its thought-provoking themes and beloved characters, Netflix’s crime drama’s center point is, as told by other main character Win: “Running any business is risky. It’s about the people you do it with.”

MEGA asks Peach about his take on this, being an entrepreneur himself off-camera. He admits, “I agree, because your decisions mean a lot to those you work with. Not just your employees but suppliers as well—anyone you come across in the business. They rely on your decisions, so that makes everything risky. But business is all about people. You need people to run things with you—it’s the most crucial thing.” 

Peach meshes his businessman and his actor side together once again in the series.  Going back to his 2011 film The Billionaires, Peach tells MEGA Man, “That one was a biopic about the real businessmen in Thailand. This one is new—doing business through religion, so it’s very different. I needed to adapt because I have my own biases as well. I think that it’s wrong, but for the character I’m playing, it’s not. I needed to work around how I could turn off my businessman side, but not so much that I couldn’t relate to it.”

If there’s anything Peach learned from the series that he could apply in real life, it’s that being calm in decision-making makes or breaks the business. “Everything falls apart because of hot-headed and impulsive decisions,” the actor says. “That’s why things derail.”

For Filipino viewers, whom Peach considers a sister country to his own, he tells MEG Man: “The whole show is about real-life scandals and how we work around it. So you can learn more about our culture on a deeper level, the same way I did with the Philippines when I was taking Potato Corner to Thailand.”

The star also ends the press conference by saying he would love to venture into the Philippine entertainment scene and work with Filipino actors or creatives soon.

Post-COVID, the startup culture in the Philippines has evolved—we’re seeing younger business leaders enter the market and founder Ryan Sy of DATU Philippines is one of them. “It’s refreshing to dial things down, start with the basics, and create something uniquely my own,” he tells MEGA. And as he entered the hub of rising enterprises, he did so with a line of modern ethnic jackets woven from textiles called DATU together with co-founder Lyra Tarectecan.

Starting From the Bottom

Ryan shares with MEGA Man that he had next to zero experience in logistics, sales, and marketing. Taking initiative, he took to consulting, learning, and immersing himself in observations that can begin the sprouting of a idea. “After coming up with the brand identity and internal deck, and with the help of my partner Lyra Tarectecan, I was able to find creative specialists who were just as enthusiastic about this working project as I was,” he says.

DATU blossomed from a trip to stores in Thailand, Laos, and Malaysia. Coming across fabric pieces in Bangkok that caught his eye and interest, he came home with two fully packed Balikbayan boxes for his family and friends. “After the 50th time hearing, ‘Why don’t we have anything like this here?’ I decided: ‘You know what? We really should’,” he says.

As is with other businesses, starting something is very different from actually executing and maintaining it. However, Ryan shares with MEGA Man that his vision, alongside Lyra’s, would not shape the brand that DATU is today without the lifeline—his team. “They are specialists who know more than I do about certain aspects of my business; people I can depend on and who I often turn to when I need to bounce ideas or when I feel lost,” Ryan says. “Maintaining a brand is also pretty easy when you believe in it—which is pretty much a requirement—because why would you try to start something you don’t believe in anyway?”

Taking the leap of faith as a team and having that trust—from leader to member and vice-versa—essentially molded the brand to its entirety. “I was lucky enough to get to know and develop proper bonds of mutual trust with each member of our team. My partner, Lyra, who is much more of a people person than I am, is also the wildcard that keeps us all together on this road,” the founder says. “Without a doubt, I’ve asked my team to make sacrifices for the sake of our brand, but their faith in our products, and in each other is what keeps us moving forward,” he shares further..

But aside from the foundation of the enterprise, the founder reiterates that having fun with it is equal parts essential. “I know very little about fashion trends, but I think our pieces are super cool, and I have so much fun putting into words how and why other folks should think so, too,” Ryan admits. “Every time we launch a new line, build a campaign, or announce a sale, I get to do one of the things I love the most; I get to write about it,” he tells MEGA.

DATU is Traditional Filipino Today

“We kicked off by gauging the Philippine market with a line of ethnic jackets that embodied the statement “uniquely primal”. DATU embodies what I believe is the unique aspect of being Filipino. It is an expression of our easily forgotten roots—not only as strong individual leaders, but as harmonious collaborators in the business of life,” Ryan explains. “A Datu not only protects his people; a Datu finds cool stuff, creates cool stuff, and shares cool stuff—so that everyone can have cool stuff, too! And I believe we have some cool stuff on offer here.”

The ‘cool stuff’ are intricate designs and complementing colors, sublime woven-work and fabrics that scream equal parts ethnic and modern and emphasize Asian excellence. Innovation also grows the business—both in profit and in journey. The value that Ryan, Lyra, and their team add to DATU is necessary for the enterprise to flourish—otherwise, it will come to a plateau. The founder shares with MEGA that constantly upping the game in the business is vital—and a process he enjoys. “Welcome surprises and adjustments apply to our designs, our fabrics, and the thematic elements of our campaigns,” he says. “Essentially, we’re still figuring out and adapting to what works, and this process will continue to evolve as long as DATU exists. Southeast Asia is a treasure trove of ‘ethnic woven jackets’ and I believe that we’ve found a market for this here at home.”

“I love the process of taking a concept and turning it into a reality. Regardless of whether a business is large or small, whether it succeeds or fails, the fact that it ever existed means that Mister or Miss Entrepreneur put in that effort and took that risk to make it happen. There’s something very romantic and exciting about it all.”

Modern Entrepreneur

When at the beginning, learning the ropes and pricing the products were the team’s biggest challenges, today, it’s understanding what the market wants, and positioning themselves to deliver. “We’re still a very young company, and the selling power of any individual piece is still a bit varied and unpredictable,” he explains. We want to find the formula that works, and of course we have to take some risks to get there.”

The risks don’t include compromising quality and value of uniquely primal designs. These are the guiding principles that allow DATU to continue moving—and Ryan and his team have that desire to continue driving it forward. He says, “The launching of DATU was supposed to be my ‘crash course’ on starting a small business, and my platform for bigger things. I was happy to make mistakes, because the brand was comfortably small. But through the process of selling, interacting with customers, and all the positive feedback we’ve been getting, I quickly fell deeply in love with DATU. Now, I don’t just want DATU to work, I really want to see our brand flourish.”

Ryan and his team are taking all the steps in the rising culture of startups to make that happen. Take vision, trust, innovation, and belief—and you have all the mixings for the enterprise of your dreams. So for everyone who’s in doubt about taking that first step, Ryan has a piece of advice: “Learn as much as you can about every aspect of your business before you start. Set a budget, a timeline, and a set of goals that are specific, measurable, and achievable. If you’ve done this and are confident about moving forward, by all means, don’t ever hesitate to take that first step.”

Amidst the whirlwind of fashion-forward choices and jet-setting escapades, there lies a fragrant retreat—a carefully cultivated perfume collection—revealing yet another aspect of this multifaceted content creator.

“It actually began noong pandemic. Gusto ko kasi ma-test ‘yung sense of smell ko.” Guison shares with a laugh, unveiling a fragrance journey that kicked off three years ago. He mentions that the surge in online shopping at the time led him and his friends down a perfumed rabbit hole. Their gatherings then became a ritual, a weekly rendezvous where they’d show off their latest scent conquests. Guison, having a glint in his eye, proudly showcased the first fragrance he ever snagged, which is the Black Saffron by Byredo. And from there, he conveys that the aroma adventure refused to be contained.

Bottled stories

Beyond just keeping him smelling fresh, our fun chat with Guison took a sweet turn as he revealed the deeper significance perfumes now hold for him. “Kapag nagta-travel kasi ako, I usually buy mga generic items like keychains and magnets; eh gusto ko na nga i-push ‘yung lifestyle na minimalist,” he humorously confesses. Then, it hit him one day: “Why not get perfumes sa mga travel ko?” This idea, sparked with his girlfriend, Angelique Manto, goes beyond just smelling good; for them, it’s about crafting enduring memories. He explains that these fragrances now serve as tangible reminders of their journeys together whenever they spray them on. 

Guison discloses their routine: selecting individual scents for themselves and throwing in a couple more they both enjoy, transforming it into an instant shared treasure. He also mentions that this travel practice makes him delighted by the unexpected discovery of local brands during their scent-seeking escapades, admitting they simply ditch the research aspect and just let the moment’s aroma guide them to the perfect fragrance.

A gentleman’s playbook 

As a man, Guison stands firm in his belief that owning a perfume should be considered an essential tool for everyone now. “I think as someone in this industry, it is really important, or actually any industry, especially if you attend a lot of events. I am really happy and get validation whenever I go to an event and they tell me, ‘David, ano ‘yang perfume mo?’ or parang ‘David, naaamoy kita from afar.’ Happy ako kasi it is also an ice-breaker. It’s also a nice conversation starter. As a guy, it really gives you so much confidence,” he explains. 

The style influencer continued, expressing that even though this is his standpoint now, he empathizes with why many men might feel reserved or uneasy about delving into the world of perfumes. He disclosed that, like anyone else, he once hesitated to explore perfumes due to feeling daunted by the technical terms and such. However, he enthusiastically states, “At the end of the day, just choose a perfume that you actually like. Buying perfume should be a hobby; it should be fun, so it’s something that should reflect your personal style.”

There’s this funny guy. He’s part internet entertainer, part conyo culture connoisseur, and all-around artistic dynamo. In TikTok, he voices SpongeBob and friends in a parody portrayal; he also does conyo skits in a not-so-parody portrayal. Comedy, after all, is art expressed through rather torrid experiences. And, yes, he is also an artist, influenced by characters he watched growing up, like Happy Tree Friends. He is the nephew of acclaimed artist Jose Tence Ruiz. There’s this funny guy. Maybe you know him—his name is Raco Ruiz.

From Childhood Creativity to Digital Stardom

Unlike a sudden epiphany or dramatic career shift, his path was one of playful exploration from an early age. “It was always just something I found fun as a child,” Ruiz reflects. From commandeering his father’s camcorder for stop-motion videos to starring in his productions due to a lack of available actors, his penchant for expression was innate. “I can’t remember a time in my life where I wasn’t doing it,” he admits with a chuckle, amused by his assumption that everyone shared his passion for art. 

Enrolling in a Communication Arts course at De La Salle University proved to be a pivotal moment, despite its non-visual arts focus. Here, Ruiz discovered new avenues for his talents, serving as the go-to artist for group projects and delving into comic book illustrations for the school paper. “I could use my voice more for stuff or I could also use my art to make people laugh,” he realized, expanding his creative horizons beyond traditional artwork. The pandemic, however, catapulted Ruiz’s content creation endeavors to new heights. What began as a leisurely pursuit on TikTok blossomed into a full-fledged career, offering an escape from the confines of his corporate job and ultimately becoming his primary source of income.

The Heart of Humor, the Soul of Art

Ruiz’s heart leans towards humor, but with a twist. “I don’t like being identified as a comedian,” he asserts, preferring the title of a “professional fun-haver”, The pressure of constantly delivering laughs doesn’t sit well with him, as he fears the weight of expectations that come with the label. Instead, Ruiz revels in the joy of simply having fun and creating content that reflects his animated spirit.

However, if his humor touches his heart, art touches his soul. Ruiz finds solace and satisfaction in the process. “The art is more fulfilling because the process is longer and I get to pour more of my soul into it without having to please everyone.” With art, he expresses frustrations and truths that may not find a place in his comedic endeavors. Unlike the constant need to entertain and please with his TikToks and Reels, creating art allows Ruiz to be his authentic self, unburdened by external expectations.

Mixing Morbidity and Merriment

Ruiz speaks passionately about the impact his Uncle Jose has had on him both as an individual and as an artist. “Every time I’d go to his exhibits with my family, I would see he’s using popular culture and mixing it with morbid ideas of social commentary blended into it,” he reflects. “I found it cool.” Witnessing his uncle’s approach left an impression on Ruiz, inspiring him to explore his own distinct themes in his artwork.

While Ruiz is careful not to emulate his uncle’s style out of respect, he acknowledges the subtle influence his uncle’s work has had on his endeavors. “The flavor I think I add to that is I just make it look happy.” Despite the dark themes, Ruiz suffuses his artwork with a sense of absurdity—one that is highly appreciated. 

There’s Always Funny in the Fight

The artist’s specific aesthetic and his ability to invest personal experiences into his work stem from a combination of factors, including his health struggles. “As much as I hated going through this as a teen, I think it shaped my perspective on life,” he recalls, referring to the autoimmune sickness that plagued his youth. 

“You know how they say pressure makes diamonds? I’d like to think, ‘Okay, that was my pressure moment.’ Because of that, I was always forced to look at life. I was like, ‘If I’m going to be happy about stuff, I need a way to cope.'” he clarifies. “I would draw violent cartoons in my notebook.” The image of him hunched over his sketches—channeling his inner turmoil onto the page—paints a poignant picture of soundness. “But,” he adds, his laughter carrying a warmth that belies the gravity of his words, “of cartoony animals going through painful situations. In a way, I would view myself as that cartoony animal going through pain.”

The constant physical pain he endured compelled him to find coping mechanisms, leading him to draw violent cartoons as a form of catharsis. Through humor, he found a way to helm his difficulties and see the funny side of life, refusing to succumb to self-pity.

The Unintended Effects of Nostalgia and Comfort

His aesthetic, characterized by bold, cartoonish elements with eye-catching colors, is heavily influenced by his upbringing in the ‘90s skateboarding culture, as well as his exposure to iconic cartoons like Looney Tunes. Additionally, growing up surrounded by sisters and being primarily surrounded by girls in his social circles introduced him to a world of Lisa Frank, Bratz dolls, and glittery aesthetics. This juxtaposition of masculine and feminine influences has shaped Ruiz’s palette.

Ruiz shares instances where his art, intended to evoke introspection or shed light on dark themes, pleasantly surprised viewers by eliciting feelings of nostalgia and comfort instead. In one exhibit, where his paintings depicted cartoon characters engulfed in flames to represent his difficult childhood, viewers found solace in the familiarity of the imagery, reminiscing about their own childhoods. Similarly, in another exhibit highlighting the detrimental effects of commercialism on children, with characters morphed to appear distressed and monstrous, viewers found comfort in the nostalgia of the artwork rather than focusing on the intended social commentary.

While Ruiz’s initial intention was to provoke deeper thought and awareness about societal issues through his art, he finds solace in the unexpected resonance his work elicits. “Even if that wasn’t my intention, that’s heartwarming,” he shares with a smile, his eyes alight with a mix of surprise and contentment. The genuine warmth in his voice emphasizes the impact of his creations, even when they diverge from their intended purpose. “At least it’s making them happy.”

Comedic Compassion

Ruiz approaches comedy with a thoughtful and considerate mindset, recognizing the importance of the balance between humor and sensitivity in today’s landscape. He adheres to a personal rule of avoiding making fun of other people’s disadvantages. Instead, his humor tends to poke fun upwards, targeting the elite and traditional stereotypes of hyper-masculinity, while refraining from mocking physical disabilities or other personal hardships.

Where sensitivity to offensive content is heightened, Ruiz acknowledges the need for comedians to adapt to the evolving world. He rejects the notion that comedy is dead, but rather believes it is transforming to align with societal sensitivities. “There are already so many hateful things going on. I don’t want to add to making fun of people who are having a hard time. That’s why if you’ll notice with my humor, I never make fun of anything physical, like physical disadvantages of people. Never. I don’t want to make fun of that.” 

To ensure that his content remains respectful and inclusive, especially during his early stages on TikTok, Ruiz seeks feedback from his Gen Z sister. By running potential skit ideas by her and listening to her perspective, he gains insight into what may be considered offensive or hurtful, allowing him to adjust his jokes accordingly to be more light-hearted and funny, rather than potentially harmful.

Ruiz’s comedy is deeply rooted in his own lived experiences and observations, allowing him to create relatable and humorous content that reflects the quirks and idiosyncrasies of everyday life. He draws heavily from personal experiences and conversations with friends to inform the content he produces in his comedy skits. His own social circles serve as inspiration for many of his comedic scenarios, embodying exaggerated versions of them in his skits. For instance, his conyo series originated from observations of friends who, despite their outwardly tough appearance, revealed themselves to be soft-hearted romantics underneath.

Flowing through Waves

“My new collection is called Traverse,” Marco Coching begins, his voice as adventurous as a balloon caught in a playful breeze. “Yung trademark ko talaga ay metallic waves—the sky meets the sea.” The artist paints his vision where the boundaries between earth and sky blur into a duet of color and form, where the horizon serves not as a sharp divide, but as a line highlighting distinct elements. It’s a canvas where each component, when brought together, forms a cohesive whole, yet retains its luminance even when separated.

Yet, why Traverse? Is there a method to this journey, a purpose of this relentless search? “Yung waves ko ay more fluid na siya. I’m still growing. Meron pa akong ideas na pwedeng gawin.” His response carries a sense of evolution, portraying his ideas as continuous in their exploration and elevating with its expansion. It’s a dynamic nature of creation, where new ideas and techniques propel the artist forward on a changing path of discovery—an essential element when one wants to stand on their own. Coching finds himself flowing through waves.

Family constructs the bridge and leaves breadcrumbs for us to navigate their world, thereby enriching it with each step we take. For Coching, this guiding figure was his ancestor, Francisco V. Coching. As he discusses the influence of his grandfather, the artist’s response is both poignant and introspective. “Before I used to do illustrating. Pero hindi ko magaya, kasi sobrang galing ng lolo ko,” he reflects.

After all, the uniqueness of art lies in its deeply personal nature—it is a reflection of the artist’s innermost thoughts, emotions, and vulnerabilities. Yet, while external influences may leave their mark on their work, it’s the internal dialogue—the interplay between personal experiences, emotions, and aspirations—that defines their identity. 

In truth, no matter the familial ties or shared bloodlines, one cannot replicate another; they breathe, act, feel, and traverse their distinct paths. In some ways, individuals are like islands, complete in their uniqueness yet interconnected through shared experiences, forming an archipelago of ideas—each stroke of paint contributing to the collective with courage and conviction. “Nag-ibang direction, naging abstract painting,” Coching accentuates his transition towards abstract art to his autonomy.

At times, we grapple with a fear of solitude, of standing alone as islands in a vast sea of existence, hesitant to venture into the depths of self-discovery. Yet, it is in these moments of solitude that we have the opportunity to carve our own identities, distinct and unique from those who came before us. It’s essential to recognize that solitude does not equate to loneliness, but rather to strength—the strength to chart our own course, to explore the uncharted territories of our creativity, and to adopt the fullness of our individuality. For Coching, his island is the formation of an artist separate from his grandfather.

The Spirit of His Lineage

Abstract ideas serve as the cornerstone of Coching’s artistic endeavors, enriching his works and allowing them to flourish independently. Whether with oil, aluminum, or matte, artists like Coching have the power to construct entire worlds from their imagination. When created effectively, these creations have an intense impact on viewers. Indeed, the core of his art arises from the complex relationship of colors and forms, generating emotions and prompting reflection in people who see it. In this sense, Coching and artists like him raise the act of creating into a spiritual experience.

“I want them to recognize na wala ako katulad, na ako lang meron ganito,” Coching declares. “Before, may sinasabi sa akin na gaya-gaya lang ako. Medyo tumatak sa akin na kailangan iba yung gawa ko.” He reflects on past criticisms that his work was derivative, which left a lasting impression on him and fueled his determination to create something distinctively his own.

The discourse surrounding accusations of imitation spurred him to chart a unique course. “Hanggang ngayon, tumatak sa akin ‘yun,” Coching acknowledges. “Nasaktan ako noon, so I used it as motivation to work harder, to discover new ideas, bagong techniques.” It’s this critical engagement, often originating from family, that cuts the deepest—for a child to look up to their creator is akin to asking God if they were ever worthy, only to feel overlooked. “Lumabas naman siya.”

But as God is also a creator, we are confronted with the immutable reality of our existence—the intertwining of divine inspiration and human endeavor, the line between creation and creator. It is a moment of revelation, where the earthly and the divine come together in meditation, and we are left to ponder the mysteries of our existence. We become God, and we cannot be compared to others.

“The bloodline is still there. The legacy of my grandfather is ongoing, and I hope it doesn’t stop. We’re proud of Marco; he’s evolving, and getting better and better. His works are sold out in one exhibit. People are starting to notice his art,” his brother Francisco Coching III affirms, encapsulating the enduring spirit of their artistic lineage and Coching’s rising prominence.

His father Arnel Coching remarks, “My dad, of course, he’s a National Artist, one of the best, and here comes Marco—his style is modern art, he projects something different. He has something deeper. Marco grew up with my dad. Siguro, he picked up something. He’s evolving,” his father acknowledges his son’s unique voice and the influence of their family’s rich line. After all, there’s another artist in the family, one who can further sculpt his place in the Coching line. 

The Whole Sea

Navigating the maze of identity, one must sidestep the snares of comparison and unearth a niche as distinct as a wave. Is Coching his own wave? “Actually, yes,” Coching proclaims, traversing from galleries to collectors, who recognize his strengths. He embraces his identity beyond the shadows of his legacy. “Kailangan ko pag-galingan. Kailangan ko magimprove pa,” he acknowledges. Like countless artists, he understands the necessity of growth, but unlike many, he actively pursues it.

Being the other half of the pairing DonBelle, joint appearances of Donny Pangilinan and Belle Mariano call for looks that, just like them, work together. With Belle’s twist to the yellow ball gown of her eponymous character from Beauty and the Beast, Lozano worked around the counterpart of the female character. “It made the perfect sense, so went with the modern take on the Beast. The concept and reference were clear, so we reached out to Vin Orias to come up with a look that was on theme, but at the same time modern enough to suit Donny’s style.” 

Leading a number of lists for the best dressed men at the occasion, the Can’t Buy Me Love star donned a navy blue worsted wool three-piece set composed of a trench coat, trousers, and a classic vest from ORIAS Studios. Underneath the outerwear, he donned a white v-neck dress shirt and a black, silk cravat tie to create a color dimension with the pieces. For his footwear, he complemented the black and white pieces with his wingtip Oxford shoes. To finish off his look with a regal touch, he opted for a Bulgari earring and rings.

The craftsmanship of Nicolo Perez in Pick Me, his collection for this year’s Bench Fashion Week, achieves this with utmost attention and consideration to technique.

His floral core in structure

Marking this concept as his first runway exhibition, the collection stayed true to his DNA of wavy lines in boxy pieces, an equilibrium in structure and style. But this time, there is an added breath of nature courtesy of the sheer fabric and the conspicuous use of floral designs with the likes of anthurium, orchid, and trillium; as well as an elaborate use of emphasized zigzag stitching techniques—raw and real, au naturale. 

In an exclusive interview with MEGA, Perez reveals, “Since before, I wanted to do a flower-inspired collection. My own interpretation of flowers. I was looking a lot at British botanical [illustrations,] orchids, flower arrangements.” 

One with his nature

In the art of fashion design, technique without technicality is mere fluke. For the third spring of nicoló, the designer capitalized on following rules before bending them. “I stuck with the fabrics I was most familiar with,” he notes. “Sheer and denim. For the first time, we used nylon because it has that wrinkly texture that kind of [resembles that of] a petal.” 

The blending effect of fabric on fabric from appliqués and fabric to skin from cutouts mimic abstract artworks that Nicolo personally attributes to another type of flower—the orchid. “We’re expanding on our previous techniques [and] displaying that in our designs. Appliqué technique with elaborate stitching, with patterns that mimic abstract faces of orchids.” 

Adding the details of rounded pockets, swaying fringes, wavy fabric cuts, Pick Me is a testament to the 27-year-old’s spring as a blooming designer, ready to add a breath of fresh air to the landscape of Filipino designers.

In the dimly lit studio, Grae Fernandez arrives with an air of quiet confidence, clad in a crisp white shirt, snug jeans, and the kind of black Chelsea boots that scream sophistication. Tall and effortlessly attractive, Fernandez’s gaze is both intense and inviting, a dichotomy that sets the stage for his return from New York. Having spent over a year at the prestigious Stella Adler Studio of Acting, he brings with him a refined charm that is impossible to ignore. 

Punctual to the minute for the post-holiday Monday morning shoot, Fernandez effortlessly carries the weight of over a decade in the industry on his shoulders, a legacy inherited from his illustrious family of celebrities—his grandfather, late actor Rudy Fernandez, and his father, actor Mark Anthony Fernandez. Some of his notable projects include Pangako Sa’yo, Bridges of Love, and Ikaw Lang Ang Iibigin, along with being one of the members of Star Magic’s now defunct, Gimme 5.

As the lens captures his presence, it’s evident that Fernandez is ready to reclaim the spotlight and sweep the industry off its feet.

Living in the concrete jungle 

During his time in New York, Fernandez navigated a demanding academic life while being laser-focus on his goals. “Mostly focused on school, I had little time to deviate from main goals,” he admits, highlighting his commitment to his craft. 

During his rare breaks, Fernandez would engage with activities aligned with his artistic pursuits, such as immersing himself in theater and films. Outside his creative endeavor, Fernandez found solace in the company of friends. “Spending time with my friends is always a breath of fresh air and makes me feel calm and relaxed,” he shares. 

His creative circle, composed of friends passionate about storytelling, became a hub for spontaneity and experimentation. In these collaborative moments, Fernandez discovered the joy of creative endeavors, emphasizing, “You learn so much from one another, and that is where any kind of magic comes from.”

Collaborating with like-minded friends who are deeply passionate about storytelling became a cornerstone of his creative journey. “I would get together with some of my friends who are also very interested in storytelling,” the 22-year-old actor says. “There we would share ideas about what there is to express and how to do so.”

Passion for acting

For Fernandez, the pursuit of acting articulates his fascination with human life and its complexities. “I am very curious about life,” he shares. “I believe that stories are very important to us as people. We need them to feel and understand why we go through things.”

Admitting that he believes that he is still on the early stages of his creative journey, Fernandez shares that he is just enjoying the process, viewing it as a continuous learning curve. “My main goal is just to learn with every moment and, as a result, become a better person and artist,” he reflects. 

With a philosophy grounded in the acceptance of trial and error, he underscores the importance of being open, striving, and being present in the moment as essential elements for personal growth and artistic maturation.

As you step into Miguel Romulo’s place, you’re greeted by a wide-open space that feels both roomy and carefully curated. It’s not cluttered, but every corner holds something special that catches your eye. It’s what his girlfriend, content creator Rei Germar, teasingly calls a “man cave” or a typical bachelor pad. Look around, and you’ll see his unit adorned with contemporary artwork, Bearbrick toys, and skateboards, among other things. While the team is setting things up for the shoot, Romulo, out of nowhere, casually asks, “Do you watch anime?”—a simple question that peels back a layer of his personality.

Where it all began

“I started collecting toys at an early age,” he reflects. “I think my taste for it just evolved overtime, from anime figures to hot toys and now to more collectibles like Bearbrick. Maybe this is me healing my inner child.” Romulo takes a trip down memory lane, sharing that at 12, he began doodling and displaying his anime-inspired drawings in his room. At the time, it was merely a pastime, but little did he anticipate that these childhood pursuits would stay with him indefinitely.

Romulo has certainly had a genuine affinity for various art forms. Some of his fond memories include borrowing his dad’s vintage Canon camera for travel snapshots. College also marked a pivotal phase, where he pursued communication arts, nurturing an intensified passion for films and photography. “Now, I’m happy I get to see different parts of the world while appreciating art and immortalizing memories through photos,” he says. Over time, his interests widened, guiding him toward the world of paintings. “I’ve grown to love paintings and slowly acquired pieces that caught my attention. So I guess my passion for art was a gradual thing that is still currently evolving.”

Painting pursuits

In a defining moment, the 28-year-old gentleman vividly remembers deciding to take his painting collection seriously. “I was watching a YouTube video of G Dragon’s apartment tour,” he recalls. “I was fascinated by how well-curated his place is. I love how every piece is so unique, but somehow they all go together. His entire place is a reflection of his personality.” 

He currently owns paintings by Filipino artists. “I got my first painting online,” he shares. “I came across Arvin Santos’s page and instantly liked his works and got a painting named ‘Imaginary World.’ Then, I visited the Modern and Contemporary Art Festival back in 2022 and got ‘Medusa’ by Anne Barless under Secret Fresh Gallery. Lastly, ‘Rizal 1’ by Raymond Guevarra was actually gifted to me by my girlfriend and I believe it’s from Modeka Art.” 

Clearly inclined toward contemporary pieces, he points to “Imaginary World” by Arvin Santos as the one that resonates with him the most. “My mind is often cluttered, thinking about too many things at once—Santos’s piece hit me right away,” he explains.

When you gaze at diverse artworks, what captivates you? Is it the hues, the feel, or the untold tales within? For Kristian Somera, the essence of art extends beyond surface beauty; it’s the vibrant life he breathes into each piece that makes it uniquely special. In an exclusive interview with MEGA Man, he shares the significance of his artistic pursuits, providing a sneak peek into the uncharted creative realms he aspires to conquer as an artist.

The poetry of paint

“When I saw Dead Poets Society as a little boy, I knew art would play a big role in my life. It isn’t necessarily a film about art, but there was a line that John Keating said that informed how I looked at life; ‘Medicine, law, business, engineering—these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, and love—these are what we stay alive for.’” Somera starts our conversation by reflecting on this moment, recalling the time when he realized his path would involve creating and evolving with art. He also talks about the day he came across a Mark Rothko painting in New York City, which was a turning point that showed him how vast the world of art could be. “I knew that this was the kind of beauty I wanted to breathe life into—a kind of visual poetry that transcends the structure of language and, in some cases, logic and reason,” he says.

Brushing across mediums

Prior to fully embracing painting, Somera shares that he delved into diverse creative pursuits, from filmmaking to creative writing, and even ventured into space design. He mentions that the idea of turning his love for painting into a profession wasn’t something he anticipated. Yet, fate always has its peculiar way of nudging us toward avenues that rekindle our enthusiasm for life.

Artistry without borders

Reflecting on his feature in international magazines, the artist expressed his feelings as “delightful and unexpected.” Somera discloses that the opportunity unfolded when a features editor, responsible for curating art for the gallery section of British Vogue, discovered his Instagram page. An email followed, inquiring about featuring his artwork. “I had to do some digging to make sure the inquiry was legitimate, and to my surprise, it was,” he shares. Subsequently, another editor from Vanity Fair noticed the feature and reached out, offering another chance for international exposure. Despite these accomplishments, the Filipino artist maintains a humble demeanor, just genuinely appreciating the recognitions. “I’m rather new to the art scene—up until now, I couldn’t even say with absolute confidence that I’m a ‘professional artist.’ I just like saying, ‘I make art for a living.’ So to be recognized by prestigious international publications is both humbling and empowering,” he states.

Revealing another layer of himself, the artist admits that he hasn’t completely conquered his impostor syndrome. However, he underscores the significance of acknowledgments, particularly for artists like himself, in teaching the value of infusing passion into everything. He reflects, “If there’s one thing this taught me, it’s that if something is made out of love, it will get recognition. It doesn’t matter if it’s from a stranger who walks past a secluded gallery in which your piece is being showcased or from an international audience—if it’s a labor of love, it will resonate with someone, and if you believe you have the capacity to affect even a single person, a single soul, with your art, you have to keep making it.” 

His most memorable work

Having built up an impressive collection of artworks, we asked about Somera’s favorite. Clearly grappling with the decision, he expressed the difficulty, likening his work to that of his own children. However, he highlighted a particular piece that held special significance—it was created during one of the lowest points in his life. Reflecting on that challenging period, he shares, “I was going through a crisis, and when this happens, I usually try to immerse myself in nature because I find that it calms me down. I was on a flight to Indonesia and as I stared from my window into the large ocean beneath me, I thought, ‘Man, I’m just a teeny tiny speck in the vast expanse of this world, this universe; how could I be worrying about such trivial things?’” It reminded him of the smallness of his worries. The desire to capture this epiphany led him to paint—not the expansive ocean visible below, but the emotion that descended upon him as he peered through that window, transforming that introspective sentiment into a compelling piece of artwork.

Merging artistic visions

Looking ahead, the future holds a vibrant and thrilling journey for the Filipino artist, filled with exciting plans. Besides sharing ongoing discussions about local and international exhibitions, he envisions stepping into the intersection of art and fashion. “I’ve yet to figure out how to do that, whether to learn new fashion-related skills or to collaborate the way Yayoi Kusama did with Louis Vuitton or Damien Hirst with McQueen. That’s still far down the line, but it’s definitely in the pipeline because I love fashion—I love art you live your life in,” he mentions.

Art has its own path 

As our conversation came to an end, Somera imparted a crucial message to fellow artists: embrace your unique style and create art for yourself. He expounds, “This, I learned, is how you find your voice. I can’t recall how many times people have told me, ‘Add a pop of color,’ ‘You should add more of this,’ ‘Change that.’ If I had heeded every unsolicited comment I’d ever received, I never would have arrived at the style I have now.” He emphasizes the importance of having confidence in your taste and avoiding the trap of creating art solely to please others. At the core of it all, Somera’s belief is that, come what may, your art will naturally align with those who connect with it, discovering its intended audience.
