Over-the-top, larger-than-life, above-and-beyond. These are just a few things that come to mind when you think of the famed Italian fashion designer and inventor, Roberto Cavalli. Exotic prints, animated colors, and stretch jeans. Then, these are just a few things that encapsulate his brand. Known for his exuberant aesthetics, Cavalli passed away at the age of 83 in Florence, Italy, marking another significant change in the fashion industry—a world he had a strong hand in shaping.

Renowned for pioneering and patenting his groundbreaking printing technique, Cavalli’s fashion lines bore the stamp of artistry and untamed prints, a legacy imprinted upon his eponymous Maison for generations, persisting even in the face of changing trends. Addressing an audience at Oxford University in 2013, he proclaimed, “Minimalism is boring. I am a mountain in the minimalism. Fashion that is not crazy is not fashion.” 

Since the 1970s, the designer pursued the heedless nature of Italian style, diving into experiments with fabrics and printing techniques, from luxurious leather to patchwork denim. These endeavors not only attracted the attention of Hermès and Pierre Cardin, but also set the scene for him to pursue a dynamic path to build his Maison, characterized by an energetic lifestyle and inventive collaborations, including being one of the first designer-led collaborations for H&M in 2007 and custom couture outfits for Beyoncé for her Renaissance World Tour in 2023.

He wasn’t a global household name until 1993 when, through a stroke of sartorial innovation, Cavalli unveiled a sandblasting technique for denim. Introducing Lycra to jeans, the designer revolutionized comfort in trousers and ignited a media frenzy when he chose Naomi Campbell to debut them in a runway show. Thus, the trend in stretch jeans was born.

In the fertile garden of fashion, Cavalli’s collections blossomed with the vivacious hues of flora and the spirit of fauna. Embracing the primal energy of the wilderness, the designer’s legendary animal prints prowled alongside his other trademark creations: weathered denim, cascading silken ensembles, and jeweled garments that hugged the body seductively.  

In the late ’90s, the designer released Just Cavalli, a spirited diffusion line aimed at a younger audience. This venture paved the way for subsequent endeavors, including a children’s line, a home collection, and a foray into hospitality like cafes, bars, and restaurants.

Beyond his professional ventures, Cavalli’s lifestyle is footed with extravagance. His primary abode sprawled across a majestic 13-hectare Tuscan estate, a sanctuary of luxury featuring a flourishing vineyard, sleek racehorses, and a fleet of Ferraris. The estate echoed with the presence of an eclectic array of exotic companions, from parrots to a tiger. Personal indulgences included a helicopter and a superyacht christened Freedom, with its design inspired by the bold and brave spirit of Batman—just like himself.

Cavalli famously said, “Excess is success.” Reflecting on his legacy, it becomes evident that his life and work wholly embodied this ethos. From his pioneering printing techniques to his fearless embrace of bold aesthetics, always staying true to his own identity, Cavalli revolutionized the fashion industry. His passing celebrates a legacy defined by unapologetic extravagance, boundless creativity, and a relentless pursuit of success, further entrenched in the celebration of that very essence.

“I get to reach different audiences. I love doing this [content creation] because it’s hands-on and it shows who I am,” Ivana tells MEGA. She also reveals that most of her content is natural: “Whatever happens, happens. Wala akong script. I think that’s why natutuwa ‘yong mga viewers—because it’s natural.” This means that the viral ‘Pinaiyak ako ni Marian Rivera’, the ‘My Followers Control My Day’, and all the other vlogs—everything comes authentically. Ivana’s entertainment value is high, but her audience is also really charmed by quick-wittedness and sense of humor.

Coming from the good place

But really sustaining her channel, which contains an amassed number of 17.5 million, is certainly no small feat. With that, Ivana just gives it straight to MEGA: “I love helping out, I love inspiring people with my own content, and I get to be creative, to think of what I want to do. That’s touching people’s hearts and showing kindness.”

In one of her many vlogs, Ivana surprised delivery riders with free helmets and cash prizes, and they couldn’t help tearing up. It’s safe to say Ivana has a heart of gold for sharing her blessings and for using her platform to do so.

Going into the technical side

While it comes with its rewards, the biggest challenge for Ivana is thinking of ideas. “I’m a one-woman team, it’s really just me,” she shares. “And sometimes, mauubusan ka talaga ng ideas. But at the end of the day, what keeps me going is the audience who want to see more.”

And to achieve this, Ivana is always on her phone—filming, monitoring, taking down notes and ideas. She shares with MEGA, “With work, it’s really important to me to have a fast-charging phone. Rooted from Passion at Home

Today, several businesses can attest to how the cabin fever from the pandemic birthed ideas of businesses. But for Fluff, flower arrangement began as a stress reliever. “My stress levels were through the roof, as we do real estate and service contracting, two highly impacted industries then. I had always been fond of flowers, so I started buying from the usual retailers and markets,” she shares.

After seeking some knowledge on Instagram and YouTube during the lockdown days, the floral designer became more committed to sourcing blooms and getting the varieties that she wanted. Her brother, who saw her devotion to the craft, then pushed her to turn it into a business. Even with the fear of joy dissipating once passion mixes with profit, Fluff took the risk and from there, bloomed her business. 

The Blossoming Business

Fluff’s Flowers, in essence, is a floral design studio with just a side of selling loose blooms. In other words, they turn flowers into assembled art. Distinguishing their design studio from flower suppliers, Fluff says, “A shop will focus on retail, so they have to stock harder blooms that can last with or without a chiller. A design studio will focus on design—bespoke orders and events.”

Fluff further explains the difference in the form of one flower—the chrysanthemum. Ever present in places like Dangwa, its staple presence is due to its functionality in a number of events such as wakes. But with the eyes of someone like Fluff, the chrysanthemums form the wedding arch of a client. “With good taste, a good eye, skill, patience, and a healthy dose of obsession, the humble chrysanthemum is made into something special—a part of someone’s dream wedding,” she explains. 

From Nature and Back

Apart from their elegant styling, Fluff’s Flowers prides itself on their conscious decisions for nature—their ultimate source of blooms. Simply put, they strip the flowers off unnecessary plastic wrapping. But their biggest environmental move? No flower foams. 

“I thought it was reusable and biodegradable because it’s green. Apparently not! I didn’t know that every time you poke a stem into the foam, that powder that comes off is basically a microplastic,” Fluff elaborates, crediting Sustainable Floristry. 

For One’s Own Bloom

Floral design, whether as a hobby or a business, grounds you to be present in your own company or even with others. One must exercise creativity and discernment on how to create the arrangement that conveys your desired theme or mood. “Floral arrangement is a perfect way to be both focused and relaxed. Zen. It is not tusok-tusok lang. This is why ikebana is traditionally paired with calligraphy and chanoyu—they just place you in that serene zone,” she shares.

“In a casual group setting, friends can bond over the natural beauty of blooms while working on their individual designs. Or they can work together to produce a full table design that would require understanding each other’s styles and tastes to produce a harmonious look,” she adds.

In a glorious and celebratory moment back in 2018, Catriona Gray stepped out into the world in the red dress inspired by the Mayon Volcano and her much lauded lava walk, and moments later, was granted a title that holds the weight of a whole country. In an industry that projects physical and intellectual beauty, cultural awareness, and national pride, it is essentially her heart that took home the crown—Catriona is a woman of purpose and objective who takes something with her bare hands and molds it. Taking a seat with MEGA Editor-in-Chief Peewee Reyes-Isidro for the latest episode of MEGA: The Next Move, the Miss Universe 2018 engages in a candid conversation to lay out five revelations about her journey—around and beyond pageantry.

1. Pageantry was never in the cards for the international titleholder

For some, it’s a dream. For Catriona, it was a happenstance: “This was a journey I did not foresee.” She admits to MEGA that joining the industry was actually a means to acquire a platform that would bolster and support her heart for community work, an advocacy that truly shapes her DNA.

Modeling did not give her this opportunity. “It wasn’t something I necessarily found a lot of joy in,” she says. “I like the creative process, the vision, the styling—but as an individual with lots of thoughts and opinions, I felt like a mannequin.” The beauty queen says she had much more to offer beyond fronting the cameras, but she reiterates that the work allowed her to meet Filipino creatives and allowed her a moment and space to reflect on her perspective around beauty—and the mold the world insisted she fit best in. “How do I define beauty for myself in an industry that’s telling me I need to be this way? What image am I portraying to young girls while I tell them that they’re not small enough to fit into this box? Am I going to allow people to make me feel this way about myself, or do I need to form that understanding for myself?,” Catriona would often ask herself. The modeling chapter for the beauty queen was a learning curve, and gave her the resolution and desire to break out of that small box and take the meaning of success and beauty with her own hands. Being able to do so, and voice her thoughts and opinions as a woman with such strong beliefs in the Miss Universe stage felt like a significant turning point for her. With the eyes of the world on the Philippines’ candidate, Catriona chose to highlight her work with the poor and with communities in need.

Her passion was formed at a time when she felt aimless and felt the weight of supporting her family crush her; she found purpose in volunteering for a non-governmental organization. “That’s how it began,” she says. “And a friend of mine was joining Miss World, and I thought: I’m doing this on my own. What more can I do with a platform if more people were involved with what I care about?”

Aside from envisioning and doing great change, Catriona’s 2018 campaign changed the landscape of pageantry worldwide as she put all her effort into making the National Costume segment significant. “It’s the one chance for the representative to be a part of our culture and invite people to know more,” she says. “There’s no other part in the competition that gives you that opportunity.”

Furthermore, since her reign, the huge strides in inclusivity make it evident that pageantry is a platform, not just a competition. Taking measures off such as age limit, height limit, civil status limitations, and that more transgender women are competing, it boosts pageantry into a more uplifting scale. “Women were always given glass ceilings,” Catriona states. “If you’re thriving in a family life, there’s no way you can have a great career. Or if you have kids, it’s selfish of you to do something for yourself. Pageants now have evolved past that.” However, she’s also hopeful for more change and improvement, believing that women should be able to have the freedom to choose how they should display their bodies for the world to see in the swimsuit competition. 

2. While it was unexpected, Miss Universe taught her three things: be present, regain your power, and enjoy all the high and low seasons

Navigating the public sphere was a challenge for the beauty queen. She shares that having people outside your country know your name was overwhelming, that the ‘bigness’ for a titleholder becomes immensely profuse. “Even in the competition, time passes by so fast,” she tells MEGA. “So I need to be present, to have a conscious moment with what I’m feeling. How will I remember this moment—because it’s all so fleeting?”

Further, she expresses that winning the crown threw her into a bit of a loop, especially with her original intent of using it as support for causework. Catriona admits to feeling disheartened that she can’t be a leader in the duration of her reign, and there wasn’t much opportunity beyond the business side of pageantry. “I couldn’t understand why we can’t balance it with on-ground initiatives that are true to my values and advocacy. My message on the night that I won, was that I am a queen of service and people,” she says in full honesty. “I couldn’t control it, but I could control myself. So I channeled all my energy into planning what I wanted to do after my reign—regaining my power again.”

Finally, taking home the crown is such a universal and public moment, one might assume it would be the queen’s peak. Catriona mentions feeling a pressure to reach that same public achievement, but has come to realize in her whole Miss Universe journey that peaks come in different forms, and that, “it doesn’t have to be public for it to be significant to you. All of that is unique to my journey that it doesn’t look like anyone else’s. I’ve come to appreciate both the high and low seasons.”

3. Catriona is constantly in the pursuit of fronting the Filipino culture and the arts

Growing up in Australia, the titleholder shared that not understanding or speaking the language was the biggest hindrance in moving to the Philippines—a disconnect, if you will, from her Filipina roots. However, she shared that as her mother embodied and carried who the Filipino is, there was an exposure that did not feel as foreign or as unfamiliar when she stepped foot into her motherland. “Then, it was through the course of the pageant and understanding the weight of the Filipino sash that I really dove deep into our culture,” Catriona tells MEGA. “I have a greater appreciation for the Filipino culture, in things like textiles, jewelry-making, and the way of life in finding what makes us uniquely Pinoy. My journey in pageantry, I really want it to be a showcase of the identity of the Filipino people even if it’s through fashion or an accessory or a symbol—it’s small, but it’s an invitation to learn more.”

The beauty queen is currently the ambassador of the National Commission on Culture and the Arts (NCCA), and she shares that this is a position she is immensely grateful for—an opportunity to learn and an invitation for people to learn alongside her. “There’s so much to be said about our poetry and dancers and musicians,” she says, highlighting that there is a space for art in the universe for Filipino people.

4. Catriona’s golden rules of style consists of two things: figure and confidence

Even the beauty queen finds style and fashion to be ever-changing and continuously evolving—a reflection of self and an outward projection of how you want to be perceived. For Catriona, she shares she’s always been drawn to well-tailored clothing and timeless, classic pieces inspired by her mother, but her love for creativity makes her explorative spirit come alive. “I love playing with loud patterns, different textures, and shapes on my body,” she says.

When asked about being a wearer of a Filipino designer’s creation, Catriona passionately remarks, “I find a lot of pride in it. I always expect two things: one, remembering how well I was supported on the world stage by my countrymen, so I want to elevate other people and other creatives trying to put their art form into the universe—because they are so deserving and capable of holding space on that international level; and two, I think the designs are beautiful. Having a piece in your outfit uniquely made is a conversation-starter, and I love the value that it brings—it gives you an opportunity to share something about your culture.”

That said, Catriona’s first rule is to find what flatters you and position your style into your innate understanding of what you are comfortable with physically depending on your body type and proportions. Her second? Wear what makes you feel good or confident. “This is something I applied in my pageant journey as well,” she admits to MEGA. “I wasn’t looking for a specific silhouette or a specific color, all the outfit needed to do was make me feel at my best, my most confident, my most powerful and capable. And fashion has the ability to make you feel a certain way.”

5. Her twenties were a playground for figuring out who she is—and now, she knows.

Having just turned thirty this year, Catriona shares that there’s much to learn and navigate and figure out in her twenties. She reveals it was easy to get swept up in the world, to get tied down to the definitions of beauty and success in the industry and in the age of social media. “I was figuring out what being a spokesperson means to me as well. Because if I allowed it to be defined by the people in the industry, I’ll feel like I’m in a race, but in my thirties, I’m more self-assured,” she tells MEGA.

As a woman with vision and passion and so much heart poured into everything she does, Catriona says this vision became even more concrete and clear now that she has built her confidence and found herself a position where she can truly be happy—in her advocacy work, in connecting with other people, and creating. “I truly feel I’m now stepping into a place where I know how I define beauty, success, happiness—and even if those evolve, I now have the confidence,” she says. “And I feel more well-supported, well-loved, and more open to people.”

Since her reign six years ago, Catriona Gray is now in the works of putting together her first business with a community arm. In the realm of creative pursuits, she also reveals that she has exciting endeavors coming up. “I felt busy last year,” she shares, “but I didn’t have a ‘baby,’ a project that I created. So this year is the year of sowing. I’m planting the seeds. I’m going back to my roots and creating again—and I’m excited to offer it to the world.”

For stylist Bea Constantino and her beau Miguel Vazquez, their union symbolizes this analogy as they derive solidity from their cultural heritage.

Constantino’s family lineage takes root in Zamboanga, where the community spirit thrives loudly. Vazquez, on the other hand, hails from a family firmly planted in the fertile soil of Cagayan de Oro, cultivating traditions steeped in warmth and hospitality. Together, they intertwine these backgrounds, unionizing a commitment that reproduces the strength and beauty of their love. 

Roots Unearthed

Constantino had envisioned her wedding taking place in Zamboanga. However, challenges prompted her to reconsider this plan. Undeterred, she found solace in the idea of integrating traditional Zamboanga wedding attire into their prenup shoot. While hosting the wedding in Zamboanga City proved challenging, their desire to pay homage to their familial origins remained resolute. 

Despite this change in plans, fate intervened when Constantino and Vazquez found themselves in Zamboanga for a family affair last February. “I saw it as an opportunity,” she explained, her excitement palpable. Thus, the idea of a prenup shoot with the backdrop of Zamboanga’s cultural body was unearthed.

 “I reached out to my designer friends in Zamboanga and asked if I could borrow a Mascota outfit for a quick photoshoot,” she recounts. To her delight, close friend and esteemed designer, Ben Jason Caranay graciously agreed to lend her a Mascota ensemble. It was this rather serendipitous moment where she felt a connection to her heritage.

As Constantino reminisced about her collaboration with Caranay, she glimmered with gratitude. “He, fortunately, said yes, and although I was planning to just use my camera for the shoot, he contacted a photographer and makeup artist, and next thing I knew, it was this whole official photoshoot,” she shares with a surprise. When you’re from Zamboanga, it’s a community that runs deep. “It turned out for the best because now we have these really beautiful and timeless images depicting family heritage.”

Constantino’s Choice

On the night before the shoot, Caranay instructed them to proceed to an atelier instead of picking up the single Mascota ensemble from his home. There, there was a surprise. Constantino’s emotions swelled as she described the moment she entered the atelier of renowned designer Federico Navarro. “I was teary-eyed walking into the atelier,” she confesses. “There before me were six beautiful Mascota de Zamboanga sets.” The memory of that moment still vivid in her mind, she continues, “They simply said ‘take your pick’, and I was just overwhelmed with the beauty and intricacy of the designs.”

Her heart torn amongst stunning looks, she ultimately made her choice. “I chose Ben Jason’s for its soft but strong contrast with piña fabric beaded with black beads and florettes, paired with a black floral skirt,” she explains, a sense of admiration evident in her words. “And I selected Federico’s because it’s white with a hint of blush pink with beautiful dainty beading and appliques.” Bea’s decision to incorporate both dresses reflected her appreciation for their beauty. “Initially I was only going to wear one,” she says, “but they were too beautiful to not add one more set.”

A Weight Honored to Carry

Recalling the experience of donning the Mascota ensemble for the shoot, Bea couldn’t help but feel a profound connection to her ancestors and the land they called home.  “It felt emotional for me,” she shares, her voice tinged with nostalgia. “As someone who considers heritage an integral part of my life, wearing traditional attire feels like a nod to my ancestors and the hometowns where our family started.” The weight of history and tradition rested on her shoulders, yet it was a burden she deemed not as unnecessary but rather as an honor to carry. 

“I’m not sure if our shots contribute anything,” Bea continues, her words filled with humility, “but I do hope they spark some curiosity about our hometown, a certain interest to maybe know more about Zamboangueño culture and fashion and perhaps even visit someday.” Her desire to share the beauty and richness of her heritage shone through like verdant limbs, reaching far and wide to touch the hearts of those who glimpse its majesty.

Excitement Mounting on a Mountain of Love

What’s Constantino’s next move? “I have a few more shots in next traditional outfits, the next is Tausug which is interesting because it’s so different and vibrant.” Imagining the vibrant colors and intricate details of the Tausug attire, one could almost feel the energy pulsating through her words. “I have another Mascota outfit by Federico Navarro also,” she adds. The anticipation of showcasing more of her cultural heritage at the wedding was palpable. As she dug deeper into the details, Bea’s passion for preserving tradition towered. 

“For the wedding, we worked with Chef Margarita Fores and her amazing team in incorporating our Mindanaoan heritage into the menu,” she explains, her excitement evident. “And they really crafted such a special and unique spread for our guests to enjoy.” One could almost taste the flavors of Mindanao as Bea described the culinary delights that awaited their guests. “I’m excited for everyone to experience that!” she exclaims, her anticipation contagious. With each detail carefully curated to honor her heritage, Bea’s wedding promised to be a celebration of culture, tradition, and love.

Heritage is the core of identity, and legacy is the branch of a tree that finds its strength rooted in culture: nurtured and watered proudly by Constantino. As her wedding planning unfolds with the vitality of a cultural festival and unfettered by the constraints of mainstream expectations, her reverence for her customs forms every aspect of the celebration. With that, she transforms the traditional engagement ring into symbols of independence that are both thoughtful and strategic. “When redesigning an independence ring, I usually try to make it less traditional looking or go for bold modern designs. One that characterizes the wearer fully.”

As she carefully dissects the conventional design, she considers not only the physical elements but also the emotional terms of the wearer. By opting for bold and modern designs, she seeks to break away from the constraints of tradition. Whether it’s through the use of unconventional shapes, contemporary settings, or avant-garde materials, she aims to allow the ring to reflect the wearer’s newfound sense of freedom.

“We redesign the ring so the wearer doesn’t have to be reminded of such a painful time in their life. Most though, try to resell it in the market.” Dizon echoes a poignant truth—that through fragments, there exists an opportunity for change, a chance to transmute sorrow into something beautiful—or something sellable. “As they say, out of sight, out of mind. What makes them happier is what I aim to do.” There’s an empathy that glitters. She intuitively understands the tender vulnerability of individuals who seek solace in the promise of a redesigned ring. 

Moreover, by involving the wearer in the design process, Dizon fosters a sense of ownership and agency, empowering them to play an active role in shaping their independence. Through collaborative discussions and creative exploration, Dizon and her clients co-create a piece of jewelry that reflects their personal style and symbolizes their journey

“Healing comes in many forms,” Dizon muses. “Most usually, a painful reminder of what once was doesn’t need to be kept in the same style. By having an active participation in the redesigning of said ring, it gives the wearer a psychological feeling of strength and desire to move on and live life forward.”

With each redesigned ring, shredded from its former identity, new beginnings can awaken from the ashes of heartache. During one of the days of her shoot in El Nido for her magazine comeback, Kathryn Bernardo recently sat down for an intimate chat with MEGA Editor-in-Chief Peewee Reyes-Isidro. On pink and orange rattan furniture, our April 2024 cover star divulged personal anecdotes and insights. She embraces change, asserts their independence, and thrives with the shifting tides of stardom.

Not a Passenger, but a Captain

Among the five issues she’s graced for MEGA— one of which boasted six covers—Bernardo holds a special place in her heart for the Making MEGA Iceland issue from September 2016. Describing it as “memorable and iconic”, she reminisced about the breathtaking shoot of Iceland, lensed by the acclaimed Mark Nicdao. “Sobrang memorable ‘yan,” she fondly recalled, highlighting how the experience left her frostbitten with memories. “Hindi ko ‘yon makakalimutan.”

Yet, she loved the representation of the current cover: about a girl stuck on an island after a shipwreck. “Sabi ko, ‘Oh my, God, that’s perfect’, because I associated myself as a ship,” she enthused. Although not the girl depicted, she empathizes with the ship, but far from being a wreck. “The ship has been through a lot of storms lately,” she shared. With a proud smile, however, she assures, “But then, the ship survived.” She opens a revelation, steering clear of the turbulent waters of uncertainty: “I’m just so happy because I used to be a passenger of that ship; now, I feel like I’m the captain of my ship.”

Embracing Local Designers

“It’s so nice because all of the pieces are local Filipino designers,” Kathryn expressed her admiration for local Filipino creativity, particularly in fashion. She commends the decision by MEGA to feature pieces exclusively from Filipino designers, emphasizing the need to champion our homegrown talent. On the issue, Bernardo wears Bonita Penaranda, Neric Beltran, Cherry Veric, Rob Ortega, Agua Brazilian, Herwin Carzoda, and Rey Calajate.

“I love supporting local brands and local designers,” she affirmed the significance of promoting Filipino craftsmanship on an international platform. “We’re promoting the Philippines; might as well wear the pieces from our very talented Filipino designers.” Nonetheless, they are irreplaceable.

Reflections on the Core of Her Being

Venturing into more profound terrain, Bernardo reflects on the concept of purpose, a notion she finds both intricate and intimate, complex and personal.  At 28, she contemplates the multifaceted roles she plays in life, particularly as a daughter to her mother. “I want to give my family the best life there is,” she shared earnestly, revealing her deep-seated desire to share her blessings and accomplishments with her loved ones. 

Speaking with sincerity, Bernardo signifies her strong familial bonds and the intrinsic motivation to enrich the lives of those closest to her. Her perspective on purpose becomes more than an obligation, encompassing her sense of choice and devotion to her family. It’s a sentiment that encapsulates her grounded nature amidst the glitz of showbiz. “Because I want to share everything with my family,” she explained. “I want to share my milestones, all my successes and failures with my family kasi yan yung core ko.”

Eligibility

Are you a Metro Manila dweller with a taste for fashion and a passion for the dramatic? If you’re nodding along enthusiastically, you’re in luck. Open to residents of Metro Manila who are 18 – 30 years old, the casting call requires participants to be available for fittings, technical rehearsals, and the final fashion show.

The Process

Participants are expected to arrive at the designated location and time with a printed set card and dressed in a fitted white tee, jeans, and appropriate footwear—heels for women.

As you strike a pose, the Top 6 designers and the discerning eyes of the MEGA editorial team will be on the lookout for that special spark that sets them apart from the crowd. At the end of the day, a total of 48 models will be selected to walk the designs of the competing designers.

What is her skincare routine? It was when I stumbled upon a video of the 41-year-old actress discussing her beauty mantra with Shiseido that intrigued me.

In it, she declares, “Finding your light is not always easy. Sometimes the light is hidden, waiting to be found like our potential. It exists within—a brilliance that knows no limits.” As the embodiment of Shiseido VITAL PERFECTION, Anne Hathaway’s personal mantra aligns perfectly with the beauty brand’s ethos: “Potential has no age.” Inspired by her words, I eagerly visited Shiseido’s Mitsukoshi Mall location in Bonifacio Global City, determined to experience the same lifted and radiant look that the actress effortlessly embodies. Here are three lessons I learned from doing her skincare routine:

Lesson 1: There is power in proper cleansing and prepping

The journey towards flawless skin begins with a thorough cleaning and effective preparation. At Shiseido, my beauty consultant, Angelu, started the VITAL PERFECTION treatment by deeply cleansing my face with a gentle makeup remover. This step ensures that my skin is free from impurities, allowing the subsequent products to penetrate deeply and work their magic.

Next, she applied the Eudermine Activating & Hydrating Essence. If there’s anything I learned from Angelu and reading articles about Hathaway’s routine, it’s that activating the skin’s inner defensive power can prevent aging damage. By applying the essence, you are also strengthening your skin’s barrier. The Japanese skincare product harnesses two types of Hyaluronic Acid, Vitamin C, Fermented Kefir Extract, and Yuzu Extract to enhance skin immunity, recharge skin’s moisture, and support moisture retention, resulting in a smooth and resilient skin.

The Tides of Trends

MEGA confirms the return of the bohemian trend with Creative Chief Patrick Ty saying, “After severe tailoring, boho usually follows so we just forecasted what’s coming,” he shares. Indeed, Isabel Marant, Rabanne, and Chloe had boho-inspired collections for their 2024 presentations. With summer coming around, it’s time to carry on the wave of free-spirited fashion and welcome the carefree vibes of bohemian chic.

Bohemian fashion captures wanderlust. Layers of sheer cascade like waves, earthy tones and sun-kissed hues evoke the warmth of a summer sunset, while swaying silhouettes carry life into coastal living. Among these designers are Bonita Penaranda, Neric Beltran, Cherry Veric, Rob Ortega, Agua Brazilian, Herwin Carzoda, and Rey Calajate. Each designer brings their unique vision to the mix, enriching the eclectic look that defines both trends. Whether they’re diving into bohemian waves, exploring forgotten shipwrecks, or sailing the rough waters of Western fashion, one thing’s for sure: fashion never sinks.

A Comeback to Self-Love

This adventurous style is a manifesto of self-love through bohemian fashion, shipwreck chic, and Western trends. With every frayed edge and distressed detail, it adopts quirks and owns its flaws. Dreams are imagined possibilities of the future that profoundly appeal to our ideal life, which ultimately sets off the beginning of our journey that would shape our way forward. By pursuing our passion and goals, we take an active part in growing toward our potential. For Physical Therapist and Body Mechanic CEO and President Irene Lopez, her story began in the most unlikeliest of places—the hospital.

A redirection

“I grew up in a hospital because I had a heart condition, so I told myself I wanted to be a doctor. I wanted to help people,” Lopez shared. However, life is known to be a marker of change and progress, and Lopez adapted to these shifting tides. Taking Physical Therapy as her pre-med course, she fell deeply in love with it. 

“Physical Therapy is different. It’s more personal. You get to touch people’s lives in various ways and be part of the recovery the whole way,” Lopez explained, adding that while doctors add years to our lives, physical therapists “add quality to your life by making you pain-free.” This journey to healing includes exercises to fix how the body works. 

Lopez followed her heart and spent nine years as a freelance Physical Therapist. She would drive around the city from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., going from one house to another. “I didn’t know where I was headed back then,” Lopez admitted, unsure of her future. But through hard work, perseverance, and strong faith, she eventually found her footing in the most suitable place to set up her dream life: Capitol Commons in Pasig, a mixed-use development built by Ortigas Land.

Creating Harmony

Striving for a harmonious life means balancing work and personal life. Lopez found this lifestyle in Capitol Commons, where she can live, work, and play with everything she wants and needs within reach.

“I decided to live in one of the towers of Capitol Commons because I like how I’m in the middle of everything,” Lopez said, where her home is a small pocket of haven in the city that feels secluded and not too crowded. 

Lopez also enjoys the comfort and convenience her home provides. “It makes me efficient, and I can give my time to more important things. I can also walk my dog in the park and get my coffee or lunch, even in the middle of a hectic day,” she detailed, emphasizing how she can finally maximize her time and make every moment count. 

Moreover, Lopez also established her physical therapy studio, Body Mechanic, in Level 3, East Wing, Estancia Mall to expand her client base. With a great location for her business, she’s confident that she and her skilled physiotherapists can offer holistic health for all by tackling body issues and teaching better ways to move and do things.

“Capitol Commons is the heart of my life because this is where my business started,” she remarked. “I had a lot of opportunities here. Soon, we’ll expand Body Mechanic in Estancia Mall to cater to our growing clientele.”

Now, Lopez is enjoying life to the fullest, but also reminding us that every time we wake up, we have to be “intentional and conscious with everything that we’re doing so we can attain our goals.”

This is an excerpt from MEGA’s April 2024 Dining

Along the 26^th street in Bonifacio Global City is a nondescript glass door that has “Taupe” as the largest word written on it. Its irenic facade may be easy to miss, especially that it lounges alongside the humming restaurants and cafes in the vicinity. But the geniality this entryway evokes is a precursor of the experience to come. We say, in this case, do judge the place by its exterior.  

The fulfillment of Chef Francis Tolentino’s years-long ambition, Taupe is the dining version of “quiet luxury.” While those words have somehow lost their meaning in fashion due to over-usage, in the Philippine dining scene, however, the concept holds strong merit.

In recent memory, there have been arguments about restaurants that offer tasting menus (Taupe offers eight-course or ten-course menus, with the option to add cocktail pairing, concocted by mixologist Radge Egar).

For some, the pedagogic introduction to the dishes and the environment itself may seem too busy or lofty; for others, it’s a welcome reminder of our heritage, and the skills and passion of the people making it. Within this polarizing discourse, Taupe may have found the perfect balance. 

AROUND THE PHILIPPINES

Dining at Taupe, which is named after Tolentino’s favorite color, is like taking an unhurried and enlightening trip around the Philippines, where many of the restaurant’s ingredients are sourced. But, while such is the case, it would also only take seconds upon entering to know that whoever birthed the ideas for this place is an avid world traveler: Guests are promptly welcomed in by a modern, cozy bar that stands beside a prominent staircase with recessed lights—which leads to a visible wine cellar. The marble dining tables and chairs as soft as suede, all in neutral shades, are illuminated by white, pendant lights.

On the end corner of the restaurant, atop a few steps, is the pass—a widely open one—where guests can marvel, in full view, the well-rehearsed dance happening in the kitchen. Then, in that same place, items in black wooden crates will catch anyone’s attention: It’s a collection of different kinds of locally made artisanal salt. This place, in essence, is a reflection of Chef Francis Tolentino’s journey.

“Ancora,” Italian singer Mina’s voice reverberated as the Spring/Summer 2024 show of Gucci concluded. This iconic 1978 track, lyrics penned by Cristiano Malgioglio, met the musicality of record producer Mark Ronson in this Gucci runway remix—even getting the signature Gucci Rosso Ancora hue on this edition’s album cover. 

Creative director Sabato De Sarno has always been keen on including Mina’s song in his debut show under the Italian maison. Ronson, who’s a friend of De Sarno’s, understood how the historic album anchors the narrative of the show. For De Sarno, “ancora” meant a lot of things. It was a deep, intimate story of something lost, or something one still has, that you still want more of. It’s only fitting that it was the Italian pop classic’s words that echoed during this pivotal debut.

De Sarno’s first collection at Gucci marked a complete shift in the maison’s fashion code, especially following Alessandro Michele’s momentous time as creative lead. This season, Gucci is centered on modern day utility, everyday elegance, and quiet confidence. 

Down the runway, it’s a story of passion, of seeing red. Appealing to the women of today, De Sarno introduced the house’s oxblood shade as a symbol of all things free, bold, and sexy. 

The collection’s striking color palette pays homage to founder Guccio Gucci’s time as a bellboy at London’s Savoy Hotel in 1897, the place that inspired him to establish his own Italian leather goods company that will later on be one of the most prominent fashion houses of the century. 

The defining elements of Ancora are structure and color, as seen in floor-length vests, cotton jackets, and wool coats. Cashmere and silk tank tops as well as crystal detailing in fringe skirts, silk dresses, and wool tops added flavor to the collection.

Shiny leather skirts and shorts are also paired with chunky rib sweaters, gabardine jackets, and cabans. It’s also hard to miss the Signoria slingback pumps, Horsebit platform loafers, and Jackie handbags all dipped in the Gucci Rosso Ancora hue. 

Michele’s seven-year tenure with Gucci can easily be seen, heard, and experienced in loud moments. It was a fantasy—geeky, freaky, eccentric, contemporary, gender-bending, and even vintage. 

But De Sarno’s role now is to trace back the maison to heritage, luxury, and intrigue. His entry marks a reignition of Gucci, especially after the house’s performance decline in markets like China in 2020.

When did your fashion journey start? 

RS: I started after graduation. Passion project talaga siya. I was also looking at other companies and designers. Naging full-time work ko talaga siya no’ng pandemic. It was late 2019 when I decided to quit my job and focus on Randolf.

JS: This year is actually my 21st year. I was telling RJ earlier that for me, my journey with fashion started when I joined the Philippine Fashion Design Competition back in 2000. After that, it’s one project after the other. 

What’s your fashion ideology? How would you describe your creative process?

RS: My process always starts with music. I apply it to everything, even made-to-order designs. I always ask my clients for a song or playlist, which I can listen to and get inspiration from. When it comes to ideology, I believe that clothes should be enjoyed. It should make the person wearing it feel more confident. It should be about the person, not entirely about the clothes.

JS: I always say that my clothes are always a work in progress because I feel that making clothes doesn’t stop after making it, delivering it, or when the client uses it. I want the clients to be able to enjoy them as much as they can and make them part of their future orders because that creates a lasting relationship with me and what I make for them. 

Can you talk about the pieces you brought here today?

JS: The pieces today are part of my collection for Bench Fashion Week. It’s still in keeping with what I think people look for in my pieces: tailoring. At the same time, they have a different flavor. I incorporated historical patterns, particularly baroque with the oddly shaped structures. 

RS: Mine is part of my recent collection. I like making my own clothes, so I apply that with digital prints and embroidery. And I like playing with silhouettes, so it’s an oversized printed suit with a star lapel.

How did you two meet and how long have you known each other? Can you describe the relationship you have?

RS: Hmmm…(laughs)

JS: (laughs) Okay, I think mas through Noel. Hindi ba?

RS: Parang hindi? 

JS: Okay, so it’s either through Noel Manapat, who’s the creative director of Bench Fashion Week, or Raymond Ang, who’s a common friend of ours. So, hindi namin ma-determine through whom. 

RS: Or kailan ba talaga. Parang sa exhibit?

JS: With Noel, it’s always through something, like a show or a project that we both happen to be invited to or involved with. We just see each other there. It just happened.

RS: Parang mga “hello” lang. (laughs)

JS: Most of the time, very random exchanges. Kapag nagkikita kami, like, “Ang ganda ng gawa mo” or—

RS: —gusto kong magpa-mentor. (laughs)

JS: Hayon! Gusto niyang magpa-mentor (laughs). It’s also as simple as me liking his posts because I really admire what he’s doing. Among the crop of designers now, or at least his generation—and I’m not saying this because we’re on camera (laughs)—sinabi ko rin ito kay Noel before that, you know what, I really like RJ. For me, he’s very authentic. 

He was the one who really started doing playful and colorful pieces. Kasi di ba, ang perception ng marami sa barong is it’s only worn in weddings, or by our dads or lolos. Very serious and costume-y. But, RJ was able to translate it to become more relatable because of his themes and patterns. If you’re really a good designer, you’re able to translate something that used to be “old” into something that becomes part of the younger generation’s wardrobe.

RS: ’Yong favorite ko talaga about Joey is you know if it’s a Joey Samson piece without asking.

JS: Talaga? (laughs)

RS: For me, that’s the trademark of a great designer.

JS: Ano ba ’yong great? (laughs)

RS: Hindi mo na need ’yong tag or label. Alam mo na kung sino ’yong gumawa. I’ve always admired Joey’s work. Ilang beses ko na siyang kinukulit mag-mentor sa akin. (laughs)

JS: Sabi ko sa kanya, we’ll get there (laughs). I just have to find a way. I don’t want to be stiff and serious. Gusto ko ’yong mentoring will be like nagkukuwentuhan lang kami and not something na, “Oh, may mentoring ako kay Joey, kailangan ko nang lumakad.” Masyadong forced or contrived. I wanted it na, “May ginagawa ka ba? If wala, let’s talk. Kung meron, let’s move it.” I’m still trying to figure out how to do it.

This is Marina Summers’s origin story. Just like any other creative out there, it all started with a concept deck.

“Ever since, ang trabaho ko na ay bumuo ng konsepto, magsulat, at magdirek,” shares Marina, who once worked as a producer for a big television network in the Philippines. “Ang una kong ginawa bago ako humawak ng makeup at wig, gumawa ako ng concept deck kung sino si Marina Summers. Ganoon ako ka-cerebral. I really wanted to make sure na buo ’yong konsepto at imaging para lahat ng desisyon na gagawin ko—fashion, makeup, performance, and the way I carry myself—it all makes sense cohesively.”

When she first did drag, was she able to achieve that? She admits to a definite, “No.” Along the way, she was exploring and finding what works best for her image of Marina: festive, tropical, and Rio-oriented. Think Carmen Miranda.

But eventually, she began to feel more confident, beautiful, and powerful when she was doing the bombshell brand—sex on legs, glamorous, but still carrying that tropical island diva theme. 

Marina made sure she chose a drag name that’s going to be a household name, something that’s both remarkable and marketable. The name Marina came from the word “marine,” which pertains to the sea; and Summers is from the summer season. The name Marina also represents the mermaid fantasy series she grew up watching. 

“It’s an extension of my inner child na naglalaro sa loob ng kuwarto, nagsusuot ng punda ng unan, at nagpapanggap na sirena,” the 27-year-old shares. “Now, I’m able to do that without hiding—in glamorous clothes and full regalia. It was me playing with my younger self. The overall theme is the Filipina diva, as the first Filipina to compete in an international all-stars franchise. It means a lot for me to bring the entire country there and represent something bigger: the Filipino heritage and culture, my fellow drag queens, and the entirety of Filipino drag. It’s the full Filipino excellence on display.”

HOMECOMING QUEEN

When she was in Drag Race Philippines Season 1, not a lot of designers agreed to do Marina’s clothes. But this time around, in Drag Race UK vs The World Season 2, she was able to fulfill her dream of being a Filipina muse on and off stage. The Filipino designers she has worked with are also all-stars, including Albert Andrada, Neric Beltran, Jude Macasinag, Leo Almodal, and Mak Tumang.

All of the concepts of the designs came from Marina herself. With the help of her stylist Paul Sese and guidance from MEGA’s fashion director Ryuji Shiomitsu, she gave the designers full agency to put their own twist to her ideas. The results were pieces that were still truthful to Marina’s vision: holistic, polished, and represented excellence. 

In drag, Marina’s personal style is inspired by Miss Universe fashion: evening gown, national costume, swimwear, production numbers, and the fashion of it all. It also includes press conferences, interviews, and arrival looks. 

That’s a lot of beautiful creations, but if there’s one outfit that she can wear for the rest of her life, it’s definitely the evening gown. “If I were to be glamorous forever, I would gladly do it,” she notes. Over the years, she was also able to explore different avenues of fashion, such as camp, avant-garde, and haute couture, while sticking to her fashion formula: chic, sleek, and sexy.

A story of adventure, resilience, and deep connections to heritage, Alahas author Maria Angelica Bermejo aims to kindle pride and inspire readers to rediscover and celebrate their own roots. Through showcasing creations and remarkable heirlooms of the Philippines, the gap between the past and present is bridged.

Bermejo, who has nearly four decades of expertise in antique collecting and jewelry preservation, has had her work featured at the Ayala Museum Shop and during the 2020 Dubai World Expo.

“In my youth, my mother consistently gifted us with jewelry during significant milestones, such as graduation, 18th birthday, and other special occasions,” Bermejo recalls. “Each piece made me feel incredibly special. It was during these moments that my fascination with jewelry took root. As I transitioned into collecting antiques, my appreciation deepened. It wasn’t just any jewelry I sought; it was pieces that held a deeper meaning, that whispered stories of their own.”

During her research, she discovered that her great-great-grand aunt had operated a jewelry store named La Sampaguita in 1927. It appears that the passion for jewelry runs deep in the family. The birth of her first granddaughter during the pandemic pushed her to create something enduring for her children and grandchildren—a legacy that would help them navigate the future. From being a private collector, she became a self-taught designer skilled in the intimate art of jewelry. 

PAST CONNECTIONS

“As humans partaking in this collective journey, our connection with these objects is shaped by the varied experiences we encounter,” Bermejo narrates. “Engaging with fellow collectors enriches my perspective, providing a vibrant exchange of ideas. Venturing markets expose me to the wonders of nature.” 

From wild boar tusks and shells to seeds and glass beads, they become parts of jewelry that carry a unique story. Within her armoire, she discovered overlooked, broken, and lonely pieces of jewelry. While metals like gold and silver hold inherent value, the understanding and sentiments attached to these pieces prevent Bermejo from melting them down. Each item, no matter its state, is too important to lose its individual narrative.

On a bright and balmy morning on the twentieth floor of a high-rise building, vibrant energies fill a soulful studio. A few feet away from the entrance is Kim Jones, who is in the process of receiving a braver and shorter hair edit. With her, of course, is Suyen Salazar, at her utmost nature: a sharp pair of scissors in one hand, a finger comb in the other, all while wearing a set of massive velcro rollers. “We are just cutting a few inches of her hair before we start,” she greets MEGA, inviting us to look around her space.

Every detail demands attention: the curved dark wood wall, the out-of-the-ordinary reception, the wiggle side chair, with each corner appointed with natural sunlight. “I definitely love my mirror the most,” Salazar says, smiling when asked about her favorite element in her studio. “It has to be since it would be one of the only things I would be looking at all day. We positioned it in a way where the focus is just on me and my client. In a way, I want them to feel like they are the only ones in the room.” 

On a deeper level, however, her new space is conceived to be more than just a salon—in her words, it’s a “hair home.” Suyen explains further, “I really wanted this space to look more like a showroom, a place for my clients to be comfortable in, and to enjoy more hair services since that’s what my clients have been requesting for throughout the years. Not having my own space definitely limited me. I wanted to continue to grow with my current clients and welcome future clients so that even if they didn’t come in for a haircut, they would still be able to enjoy treatments and other services.” 

And that, somehow, explains the reason behind her success: She cares for her clients the same way she cares for hair—with genuine love, care, and sincerity. 

On manifesting her career and making it happen

Salazar, who is known for her mastery of minimal, effortless, and understated styles, had an early manifestation of her career. “Hair has always been a part of my life for as long as I can remember,” she recalls. “At thirteen, I would spend most of my time flipping through magazines and ripping out pages where the beauty credits were printed.” 

Today, she is one of the most in-demand hairstylists in the Philippines, and has been earning  approvals from personalities like Kelsey Merrit, Jess Wilson, Sarah Lahbati, and Kim Jones. “When you’re passionate about something, you never really stop doing it despite what isn’t going right in your career or life,” she contemplates. “Just be patient, and everything will eventually fall into place. Every encounter will lead to another opportunity. There’s so much more to learn, do, and grow. Styles evolve.” 

On what is next for the hair artist 

Salazar has managed to be exactly where she is meant to be now: in her own hair home, surrounded by the muses she admires the most. Like any thriving creative, her passion, fearlessness, and hard work cemented her success. But then, of course, it’s more than that. Talking about her beauty story allows one to understand why she has reached her coveted status: Suyen Salazar knows exactly how to make her client feel seen and empowered—anyone who sat across her round mirror can testify to that. 

And while the future looks bright for the hairstylist, Salazar is not shy to admit that her roots are still growing. “I feel like I’m just getting started,” she says. “I am currently cultivating an amazing team under me, and creating more hair experiences for girls is what I want to focus on next. I strongly believe that listening to my clients and their needs is going to shape the next chapter in my career.”
