Nostalgia can be the ground of creativity—a potent force that fuels our imagination and shapes our artistic endeavors. In childhood, we find ourselves drawn to worlds of fantasy and novelty, where heroes and villains collide in epic battles and dreams burn bright. One such novelty exists in fandom, a community where fans come together to share their love for beloved franchises. This community endures inspiration, guiding us back to the stories and characters that ignited our passion in youth. Santi Obcena pays homage to the nostalgic roots of our lives, circling back to adulthood where catching ’em all still holds a special place in our hearts.

With the idea of Pokémon as the central theme for the barong, the MEGA YDC alum embroiders a playful homage to childhood dreams and pop culture iconography. This icon? Charmander, of course.

Roots Before Rockets

“It’s something that the groom has been interested in for the longest time,” Obcena reflects. “Since he was a kid, he’s been a big Pokémon fan. I’m also a big Pokémon fan. So I said, let’s play with this.” And play they did. With the enthusiasm of trainers, Charmander’s flame flickered to life. As the design blazed into existence, it ignited memories of childhood wonder and feelings of adulthood nostalgia. 

While not the first, Obcena acknowledges other designers who have specifically gone into embroidery of the traditional garment. RJ Santos of Randolf has practiced this method in his own ways, incorporating themes of missed connections, heartbreak, and even some 1950s diner aesthetics. The Barong tagalog is traditional, and perhaps the idea of nostalgia through embroidery is a prevalent theme. 

“We never anticipated it going viral,” Obcena muses with a hint of surprise. “But then with every project that we do for clients, it’s always a personal thing.” He notes that many people, including himself, continue to engage in different aspects of the Pokémon franchise, such as playing Pokémon Go, a mobile augmented reality game, or exploring other games like Pokémon Unite, Sword and Shield, or the Legends of Arceus. Despite their initial expectations, they never anticipated that the interest in Pokémon would reach such unprecedented levels, such in the case of fashion and tradition.

But don’t underestimate the power of fandom—connections can often feel fleeting, but the bond forged through shared passions is something extraordinary. The realization hit him like a bolt of lightning—this shared love for Pokémon ran deeper than imagined. “We never thought it would go this far,” he confesses. What had started as a fascination, had blossomed into a phenomenon.

From Foundations to Fireworks

It’s all about finding the right balance. Obcena still honors the foundational elements of Filipiniana, such as using classic fabrics like piña and cocoon, as he also incorporates modern techniques like hand-guided machine embroidery to encounter contemporariness. “I wanted it to be a marriage of the old and then the new. I still want it to look like a barong. I don’t want it to look like anything else,” he says.

For Obcena, his designs lie in their capability to reflect the wearer’s personality. “Basically it’s still the barong that you know and love but it has more gravity to it because the embroidery that’s featured on the barong that you’re wearing is something that you actually like, something that represents you,” he shares. He highlights the joy of incorporating pop culture references, such as Pokémon, into his designs, noting, “In this case, with Pokémon, it basically represents a lot of people’s childhood. It’s just really fun. It takes out the seriousness in it being the Filipiniana.”

Innovation with Integrity

Obcena acknowledges the challenges that arise, particularly through copyright issues. “I don’t own the characters for Pokémon because they’re basically owned by Niantic and Nintendo,” he explains candidly. Despite this hurdle, Obcena remains committed to his principle of never mass-producing his designs. Each piece is crafted as a one-of-a-kind creation, ensuring the exclusivity of his work.

“Part of our principle in doing all of these custom embroidery is that we never mass-produce anything,” he affirms. “Everything is basically hand-drawn.” In the case of his Pokémon-embroidered barong, Obcena took on the task of redrawing iconic characters like Charizard and Charmeleon, adding his unique touches to the design, including curly queues and fire aspects. 

Through creation, Obcena shuns the notion of finality, yearning instead for a dynamic assemblage of ideas through creative collaboration. He integrates the client’s vision with his manifestations. This approach allowed for a fluid exchange of ideas, textures, and figures, resulting in a design that was greater than the sum of its parts, and each element enhanced the other to form a cohesive whole. It’s almost like an evolved Pokémon itself.

Old Flames, New Horizons

Obcena emphasizes the importance of understanding the foundations of design before venturing into new territories. He believes that while innovation is essential, it must be grounded in a deep appreciation for the techniques and practices that have come before. However, this reverence for tradition does not equate to rigid adherence to outdated norms. He encourages new designers to push the boundaries of creativity while still paying homage to their roots. 

“When you’re trying to innovate on something, you have to know where it’s coming from, why it happened that way, how people made it that way. So before stepping into the future, you have to know how it was done in the past,” Obcena explains. He adheres that as long as innovations respect the essence of tradition, there are no limits to the artistic freedom one can explore. “Because after that, you can go as crazy as you want, as far as you want with the idea. As long as it doesn’t break it to the point that you cannot recognize it anymore.”

Tradition often takes itself too seriously, and Obcena reminds us to explore the fiery side of design. With his Pokémon-embroidered barong, he celebrates Filipino heritage with a flame of whimsy and a spark of nostalgia. Nostalgia can be the root of creativity, and its execution can bring to life the acceptance of the present. And as the internet continues to buzz over his creations, Santi Obcena is a designer who knows how to catch ’em all—attention, admiration, and maybe even a Charmander or two.

When we talk about the influence of Donny Pangilinan, it goes beyond the screen. His personal style plays a big part of it, and it reflects who he is as a man—traditional at best, but with a twist of adventurous modernity. Indeed, his style at the 2024 Star Magical Prom attests to that. In an exclusive interview with his stylist John Lozano, he reveals how they created the actor’s attire that could fit well in both fairytales and true to life events.

Making the look

Being the other half of the pairing DonBelle, joint appearances of Donny Pangilinan and Belle Mariano call for looks that, just like them, work together. With Belle’s twist to the yellow ball gown of her eponymous character from Beauty and the Beast, Lozano worked around the counterpart of the female character. “It made the perfect sense, so went with the modern take on the Beast. The concept and reference were clear, so we reached out to Vin Orias to come up with a look that was on theme, but at the same time modern enough to suit Donny’s style.” 

Leading a number of lists for the best dressed men at the occasion, the Can’t Buy Me Love star donned a navy blue worsted wool three-piece set composed of a trench coat, trousers, and a classic vest from ORIAS Studios. Underneath the outerwear, he donned a white v-neck dress shirt and a black, silk cravat tie to create a color dimension with the pieces. For his footwear, he complemented the black and white pieces with his wingtip Oxford shoes. To finish off his look with a regal touch, he opted for a Bulgari earring and rings. 

Elevating his style

With menswear, pieces tend to be more basic and straightforward. But what sets an ensemble above the rest are the layers of elements that equate to a personal and exceptional style. Case in point, the details on Donny’s outfits.

Looking closely at his suit, Orias injected texture play with the use of a glen check pattern. “The first thing I keep in mind is his look and branding over any theme,” the stylist explains. “What’s important is that the look remains consistent with his style and taste. Then, the rest will follow—the designer, cut, details.”

As an individual who knows that exploration is part of his personal and professional agenda, Pangilinan keeps his style true to his DNA—classic, yes, but modern. Laidback, yes, but with intricate elements that make a statement. “The statement here are the details like [the] vintage buttons on his vest, the pearl buttons on his inner shirt, and the jeweled cufflinks,” Lozano notes.

Tailoring your fashion

Concluding the conversation on Donny’s look for the Star Magical Prom, Lozano passed on his expertise when it comes to curating a formal look. “For men, it’s always about the perfect fit and impeccable tailoring,” he says. “You could wear a very simple suit, but if it fits really well then it will look polished and sharp. A classic suit always works, and will never go out of style.”

During the spring and summer seasons, flowers grow but not only in soil. The runway, too, is where you can find them blossoming with various interpretations. For an array of collections devoted to florae, one can wonder how else can this subject persist with a fresh take. The craftsmanship of Nicolo Perez in Pick Me, his collection for this year’s Bench Fashion Week, achieves this with utmost attention and consideration to technique.

His floral core in structure

Marking this concept as his first runway exhibition, the collection stayed true to his DNA of wavy lines in boxy pieces, an equilibrium in structure and style. But this time, there is an added breath of nature courtesy of the sheer fabric and the conspicuous use of floral designs with the likes of anthurium, orchid, and trillium; as well as an elaborate use of emphasized zigzag stitching techniques—raw and real, au naturale. 

In an exclusive interview with MEGA, Perez reveals, “Since before, I wanted to do a flower-inspired collection. My own interpretation of flowers. I was looking a lot at British botanical [illustrations,] orchids, flower arrangements.” 

One with his nature

In the art of fashion design, technique without technicality is mere fluke. For the third spring of nicoló, the designer capitalized on following rules before bending them. “I stuck with the fabrics I was most familiar with,” he notes. “Sheer and denim. For the first time, we used nylon because it has that wrinkly texture that kind of [resembles that of] a petal.” 

The blending effect of fabric on fabric from appliqués and fabric to skin from cutouts mimic abstract artworks that Nicolo personally attributes to another type of flower—the orchid. “We’re expanding on our previous techniques [and] displaying that in our designs. Appliqué technique with elaborate stitching, with patterns that mimic abstract faces of orchids.” 

Adding the details of rounded pockets, swaying fringes, wavy fabric cuts, Pick Me is a testament to the 27-year-old’s spring as a blooming designer, ready to add a breath of fresh air to the landscape of Filipino designers.

Loewe opted for no shirts, complemented only with leather everything. Dior took over a metal-like shirt that entrapped the wearer, stylishly protected by pearls. Ami shows off more muscle in sheer.

Red hot

Color is one way to exude emotion, and red? Red is the most passionate. The Parisian runway becomes red hot as designers integrate the color in as this ravishing hue asserts its dominance in conventional and unconventional silhouettes and styles. Next season, be prepared to blush with red.

Valentino goes cherry red in one of the only looks that combats the sky blue color it’s pushing for. Wales Bonner surprises in red boots. Balmain gets a sultry kiss from giant lips.

Filipino designer Anthony Alvarez gets inspiration from the 1979 film, Perfumed Nightmare, about a jeepney driver inspired by the American dream that he goes off the rails; of course, Alvarez gives Bluemarble a fuzzy makeover with oversized headpieces. Balmain has an embellished face on the trench coat—no jewelry needed. Rick Owens emphasizes mass luxury, with an emphasis on oversized rubber boots. 

Femininity, fluidity, and freedom

There’s a softness to the man. The flow of influence has changed. For years, women have been adjusting to men: structured, stiff, shifted. These days, menswear is not only looked to be soft and flowy, but made in gentler fabrics through couture practices. The line dares to be blurred, where balance is almost not needed anymore. 

Dior presents a collection that goes hardcore ballet-core: modernized, streamlined, and cut, complete with ballet shoes. Marine Serre adds skirts and dresses to its lineup. Issey Miyake takes its beautiful pleats, layered in a dress, and gives it to man.

Departing from convention, Piccioli employs the color blue to shift the perspective of this otherwise “masculine” color, one that was used before to present feminine ideals. The Le Ciel collection is anchored in a serene blue hue, prompting a thoughtful reassessment and adjustment of the conversation around the modern man.

The House is known for its hot pink hue, catapulted into the mainstream seasons before. So into the zeitgeist was the color, it joined the official color scale of Pantone under the name, “Pink PP”. Piccioli used the color to subvert perceptions around it; He’s doing the same for blue, in particular, a “sky blue”. For the new collection, blue is not the color of man, nor the color of women before it. Color is often rooted and reflected in society’s perception; as with language, the definition of certain colors evolves. As with ourselves, we evolve with it.

In Piccioli’s vision, the sky blue hue transforms into a metaphor, embodying the unrestrained ability to think expansively—a playful acknowledgment that the sky isn’t a limit but an open scene for limitless imagination. The execution is all ours. In this case, it is all man.

The collection started in monochromatic blacks. Turtleneck sweaters, polo shirts, zip-up hoodies, and textured trench coats that are embroidered, fuzzy, or stranded fill or attached in this alignment. Forever twins, parallel to the light and dark, both needed to intensify and enhance color, white comes onto the runway. As the proverb goes, it’s always darkest before the dawn.

When sunshine meets raindrops, it’s a reflective affair where light decides to bounce back. It throws a spectrum party and voila—chromatica steals the spotlight. It isn’t all pastels, but electric lighting of sharp greens, reds, and, of course, blue. 

The day is bright at Valentino, and it isn’t long and tired; there’s a sort of grace and gentleness at the heart of this man. There’s a palpable grace and gentleness embedded in the very essence of this man. It’s not a demeanor carved from stone or chilled like ice; instead, it pulsates with vitality—a living heartthrob.

The transformation is unmistakable, especially after a four-year hiatus from menswear. Piccioli’s artistry introduces techniques and fabrics reminiscent of haute couture practices. While the collection predominantly features suits, jackets, and shirts, there’s an unmistakable softness, akin to a comforting embrace needed at day’s end. It’s almost as if this new man demands it: craving that touch of tenderness.

Pierpaolo Picciolo explores the new man from within: traditional in silhouette, haute in construction. The shift is subtle yet remarkably distinctive, marking the entry into a new era.  The Valentino man is reinvigorated, a splash of rain gently falling to their face, melting in their metallic and robotic structures. For this season, Givenchy opts for an intimate presentation, choosing the salons of 3 Avenue George V, where the brand’s founder, Hubert de Givenchy, crafted his designs from the late ’50s until his retirement in 1995. The setting reflects a deliberate return to the origins, emphasizing the importance of the House’s historical space in the creative process. 

In the eyes of Givenchy, Hubert de Givenchy himself personifies the essence of the gentleman. The iconic blouse blanche is reimagined as soft workwear, and the collection features suits and coats with armholes, nodding to the founder’s love for capes, all in the beloved sapphire hue. The runway sees the revival of an archival scarf, casually draped on models in true Givenchy fashion. The reintroduction of the infinity G monogram and the 2G emblem on buckles signifies a deliberate nod to the brand’s foundational elements. Further, every model wears the signet ring he traditionally wore.

On the other hand, the Pandora bag transforms into a multitasking friend, boasting pockets in rich textures.

Givenchy confidently challenges traditional gender norms, blending masculine and feminine elements. Sharp, structured silhouettes share the stage with robust boxy fits, while motifs and sequins inject a bold edge for a collection rooted in tradition. Starting with the show’s curtain-raiser, Reid couldn’t help but admire the white blanket coat adorned with fringe and appliqué detailing. Paired with denim jeans and a poplin shirt boasting turquoise buttons, the ensemble was crowned with a monogram speedy 40. James remarks, “The fringe on the trench, I thought was a cool touch. I love the pop of turquoise, too.”

Despite the traditional inclination for men to avoid sparkly and furry foundations, why hold back in this modern era when the outcome is akin to becoming an attractive mascot? After all, assuming diverse textures becomes a contemporary style choice.

Emporio Armani had both outerwear and evening wear embellished and encrusted in several beads, jewels, and gems; Dolce & Gabbana added sheer, lace, and ruffles to the monochromatic collection; and Gucci made way to its neckline, creatively adding sparkle to the collars.

Graphic design is their passion

Graphic designs commanded attention at Milan Fashion Week, where the varied use of prints on garments underscored the balance between luxury and gaudy. Striving to be avant-garde rather than appearing vandalized becomes the mantra as these visual expressions on clothing aim for a refined and cutting-edge aesthetic with cool ideas to top it all off. 

Pronounce debuts a collection inspired by Zhuangzi’s dream, where designers Yushan Li and Jun Zhou translate the concept into fabric ropes and appliqués mimicking the flight of a butterfly. JW Anderson draws inspiration from Stanley Kubrick’s 1999 film, Eyes Wide Shut, with Christiane Kubrick’s intimate family life paintings, shown in the movie, influencing the collection. Meanwhile, MSGM incorporates dynamic shapes and screen prints of a train swiftly passing through a station, instilling blurred movement in their garments.

For an Italian heritage brand heralded by a descendant of the founder, the collection is more Scottish than Milan. The clothes, in particular, are reworked in feminine silhouettes: soft, flowy, nurturing. It’s these traits of kindness and caring, especially for a collection that looks to be for the outdoors, feel jarring in a way that we don’t always expect men to be—soft, flowy, nurturing. 

The color palette adopts the classic tones of beige and gray for the season, yet injects a burst of vibrancy with cooler hues such as green, yellow, and blue. Materials come in the form of mohair, leather and washed denim, with some transformed into complete garments, while others manifest as accents in collars and stitches.

Shorts blur the line with skirts, embracing fluidity over rigid structures. The absence of tight constraints allows for unrestricted comfort and freedom. An unexpected, shimmering shirt dress breaks free from convention. This contemporary shift in menswear signifies an attitude of liberation, a transformation transferred on the runway, and also making waves on red carpets with celebrities and in everyday street styles with everyone else.

After the boom in shoes and the collective embrace of handbags, skirts have become prominent, albeit slowly. The concept of a man in a skirt is becoming normal that a gasp when once seen on a male figure has now become a sigh; not because of disgust, but because you don’t think you can pull it off as well as he does.

Over at shoes and accessories, collaborating with MAD Architects founding partner Ma Yansong, the Peekaboo undergoes a masculine transformation, fixed with varnished aluminum contours. A futuristic sneaker boasts metallic accents that add an edgy vibe to any ensemble.

And is that a bag? No—it’s just speakers. The Fendi x Devialet Mania portable speaker is covered in FF casing that looks every bit of a want so strong, that you’d aim to be a sliver of a molecule only to live inside it.

Feminine shapes confidently redefine traditional masculine identities, emerging as the unexpected spotlight of the collection. The idea that clothes have no gender takes a prominent position, offering an unequivocal perspective. Silvia Venturini Fendi’s approach sets a clear momentum, providing a straightforward expectation of what Fendi’s work represents: an exploration that defies tradition. Where Fendi goes, the man will follow—through the work of a woman.

Fortunately for the founder and creative director, Giorgio Armani’s Fall/Winter 2024 Menswear collection doesn’t sink, only guiding through the waters in this expansive adventure.

With a mix of male and female models, the collection emphasizes the fluid transition between the masculine and feminine. Navy hats, aviator shades, and zip-up fleece jackets surround the nautical themes. Tailored jackets, reminiscent of surging waves, exhibit broad shoulders while embracing cropped skirts altogether. Trousers, flowing like currents, are cut wide and free, yet meticulously on hold by ankles in place. 

Striking a coherent chord, sizable leather gloves and boots in congruent style and structure converge. The infusion of striped details and accents on upper garments is thoughtfully placed, enhancing the sophisticated cohesion of the ensembles and aligning with the theme’s trip into the sea.

The color selection is mainly subtle, of navy and white and off-white and gray; textured when it needs to, but otherwise, smooth. Yet, it seems we go through the day: through beiges and browns, manifested in blazers and shorts, paired with military boots and rope-like detailed belts. It was a safari-on-a-yacht, a side mission that needed to be completed. What is a journey without a few obstacles?

Then, water-meets-sand-meets ice. The runway shifts into an all-white panorama. The skiwear segment makes its presence felt, featuring curated gear—goggles, face masks, and boards—a subtle yet unequivocal affirmation that this marks the dedicated skiwear chapter within the collection.

As the day ends on this exploration—almost like we traveled ourselves—the moment unfolds to revel in eveningwear. The designer unleashes a battalion of sparkling looks, grafting a tastefully feminine outlook onto the bedrock of rather masculine suits, reminding us of the fluidity of these constructs. Each selection, bedecked and adorned with scattered rhinestones, encrustations, and crystals, mirrors the celestial expanse above; a night sky imagined and reflected into the fabric of the show, after a long day’s travel.

Emporio Armani’s FW24 Menswear collection is one with the contemporary man. It aligns with his spirit, amplifies his ideas, and manifests in ways that only the bold can embrace; yet, always retaining a fluidity that mirrors the diverse nature of all men. In the previous year, we had Filipino actor and businessman James Reid among the select group of men we envisioned gracing the streets at fashion weeks. Fast forward to 2024, and that idea has seamlessly transformed into reality, with the 30-year-old artist making his debut at Milan Fashion Week.

In an exclusive interview with MEGA Man, stylist John Lozano, who is currently accompanying Reid on his journey, gives the lowdown on every aspect of the actor’s newest fashion venture. From the outfits they planned to how brands reacted to having the gentleman around, keep reading for an inside look at their first stint at fashion week.

The preparation 

Lozano shares that they couldn’t hide their joy when they heard the news, uttering a straightforward yet heartfelt remark: “It’s finally happening.” Little did they anticipate the pleasant surprise of multiple invitations bestowed upon the Filipino celebrity during his first international fashion week engagement. The stylist mentions that they also found themselves overwhelmed, noting that Reid wasn’t just on the guest list; he was a VIP, earning admiration from international brands. The visual proof came in the form of shared photos on their respective accounts, each capturing the actor in a prominent and influential fashion context.

The style vision

Over time, Lozano and Reid’s tandem has consistently demonstrated their knack for delivering standout and unforgettable looks, which makes this global chance a thrilling stage to flaunt their prowess. Discussing their approach to Milan Fashion Week, the stylist clarifies that his involvement leaned more towards ensuring alignment with the actor’s distinct branding and style than an extensive hands-on curation of looks, as the responsibility for that rested primarily with the participating brands.

The looks 

During the Fendi fashion showcase, the actor opted for a sharp appearance, donning a wool monogram hooded trench that, interestingly, boasted reversibility, coupled with an inner button-down shirt in wool that also offered a reversible twist. Adding a touch of chic refinement to the ensemble, the stylist highlights their choice of accessories, settling on a pair of shades and a pearl necklace.

Making his second appearance, Reid exuded a sleek black style at the Emporio Armani FW24 presentation. Choosing a black robe kimono, he paired it effortlessly with a vest and wide-leg trousers. Lozano explains their decision to honor the brand’s distinctive minimal and clean aesthetic, emphasizing a restrained approach in styling, punctuated only by the addition of a snake ear cuff to introduce a touch of edginess.

Finally, at Tod’s, Lozano simplifies their approach, expressing a clear objective: maintain a preppy and dapper look. Reid effortlessly embodies this aesthetic, clad in a nylon hooded and cropped pale blue jacket, paired with gray trousers and loafers. In line with their commitment to displaying the actor’s authentic style, the stylist reveals that the addition of sunglasses was a deliberate choice, contributing an extra touch of “James Reid” to the overall look.

The overall experience

Addressing the hustle of fashion week, Lozano acknowledges the inherent chaos and hectic pace associated with jam-packed schedules. However, the stylist expresses genuine joy, characterizing the experience as a thoroughly pleasurable start. “For sure, it has been a fun trip for us, not just work. We got to bond and [get to] know each other better in the process. We made it a point to enjoy the experience more than anything,” he shares. 

The next fashion adventure

The stylist hopes that the actor’s first dabble in the international fashion scene is just the start of many stylish adventures. “We have discussed before that this is just really to get his feet wet and experience fashion week for the first time. So far, we have been enjoying every moment, so expect us to do this more in the coming fashion week seasons, if given the opportunity,” Lozano expresses.
