In the dimly lit studio, Grae Fernandez arrives with an air of quiet confidence, clad in a crisp white shirt, snug jeans, and the kind of black Chelsea boots that scream sophistication. Tall and effortlessly attractive, Fernandez’s gaze is both intense and inviting, a dichotomy that sets the stage for his return from New York. Having spent over a year at the prestigious Stella Adler Studio of Acting, he brings with him a refined charm that is impossible to ignore. 

Punctual to the minute for the post-holiday Monday morning shoot, Fernandez effortlessly carries the weight of over a decade in the industry on his shoulders, a legacy inherited from his illustrious family of celebrities—his grandfather, late actor Rudy Fernandez, and his father, actor Mark Anthony Fernandez. Some of his notable projects include Pangako Sa’yo, Bridges of Love, and Ikaw Lang Ang Iibigin, along with being one of the members of Star Magic’s now defunct, Gimme 5.

As the lens captures his presence, it’s evident that Fernandez is ready to reclaim the spotlight and sweep the industry off its feet.

During his time in New York, Fernandez navigated a demanding academic life while being laser-focus on his goals. “Mostly focused on school, I had little time to deviate from main goals,” he admits, highlighting his commitment to his craft. 

During his rare breaks, Fernandez would engage with activities aligned with his artistic pursuits, such as immersing himself in theater and films. Outside his creative endeavor, Fernandez found solace in the company of friends. “Spending time with my friends is always a breath of fresh air and makes me feel calm and relaxed,” he shares. 

His creative circle, composed of friends passionate about storytelling, became a hub for spontaneity and experimentation. In these collaborative moments, Fernandez discovered the joy of creative endeavors, emphasizing, “You learn so much from one another, and that is where any kind of magic comes from.”

Collaborating with like-minded friends who are deeply passionate about storytelling became a cornerstone of his creative journey. “I would get together with some of my friends who are also very interested in storytelling,” the 22-year-old actor says. “There we would share ideas about what there is to express and how to do so.”

Passion for acting

For Fernandez, the pursuit of acting articulates his fascination with human life and its complexities. “I am very curious about life,” he shares. “I believe that stories are very important to us as people. We need them to feel and understand why we go through things.”

Admitting that he believes that he is still on the early stages of his creative journey, Fernandez shares that he is just enjoying the process, viewing it as a continuous learning curve. “My main goal is just to learn with every moment and, as a result, become a better person and artist,” he reflects.

Last week, Mark Tuan wrapped up his “The Other Side” Asia tour in Manila, closing the chapter for all the GOT7 members performing solo in the Philippines. While he had the crowd on their feet with his tunes, one of his standout moments for us was certainly the eye-catching nail art he showed off, thanks to Elina Jung, a Korean nail artist based in Manila. In an exclusive interview with MEGA Man, she talks about the K-Pop idol’s painted nails, revealing the ins and outs of this opportunity and breaking down straightforward recommendations for any man wanting to score that exact nail style.

How the collaboration came about

The creative mind and owner of ELINAILS shared with us the story of how the collaboration unfolded, crediting Filipino dancer Kenneth San Jose for playing matchmaker. San Jose, a regular customer of Jung, informed her that Mark Tuan also shares an interest in nail art. “Luckily, Manila was a stop on ‘The Other Side’ Asia tour and our schedules aligned. When I heard this, I knew my team and I had to grab this opportunity and say yes immediately,” she mentions. 

Nail notes from Mark

Jung explains that what she gave the Korean artist is what she simply calls a “menicure,” a term she uses to describe manicures for men. “We used shades and colors in black, gold, and silver to match his current style, which is suitable for both casual wear and performances. We used mixed elements like cat-eye gel polish, which can be manipulated by a magnet in order to achieve a certain shape, sea shells, gold chrome accents, and airbrush techniques,” she details. Jung also adds that Mark’s personal taste in fashion and art is reflected in the fact that each nail has its own distinct style. She sums up the entire experience by saying, “It was really fun and exciting to collaborate since he gave me the creative freedom to explore what nail art techniques we could do that day.” Although she has previously worked with other local influencers who frequently request “menicures,” the nail technician says she is thankful to have worked with a K-Pop artist of that caliber for the first time, and she views Mark as the biggest celebrity she has worked with to date.

Tips for men who want to venture into nail art

Jung suggests that for men considering to get their nails professionally done, it’s a good idea to be ready and have a plan, especially when gearing up for an upcoming event. “Consider your daily outfits and looks if want your nails to match it,” she explains. The nail professional continues, saying that in order to get the desired look, you must ensure that your technician is using the proper tools and techniques. “I would recommend having a consultation with your nail artist first before getting a nail set,” she suggests.

Polished perspectives

Despite stating that she has been doing “menicures” since 2020, Jung admits that it was challenging for her to look for male hand models, indicating that it has not yet been fully adopted. Now, she is pleased to see men’s manicure trends gaining popularity and agrees that they are one of the things she is looking forward to seeing. “I’m very happy that people are starting to express themselves through nails. I can find more male hand models and clients now for menicures,” she states.

I also apply my green color corrector by dabbing on my red marks. Next, I put on the foundation. I use the local brand Issy; it’s very hydrating and has a serum-like formula, making it look super natural, which is the goal. Lastly, I put on concealer when needed,” David detailed. “This helps with my confidence, and I’m glad I started using makeup. If 2013 David did this, I would be so afraid as to what people may think, but it’s 2023; you do you,” he added.

“Game ako to try that,” Marco Gumabao says with a grin, his eyes lighting up with excitement. He’s talking about his aspirations to try extreme outdoor activities, like skydiving. It’s a daring idea that embodies his vigorous spirit. However, for now, he contently indulges his newfound love for off-road 4×4 ATV driving—an adrenaline-pumping pursuit that got him hooked.

Gumabao, 28, is a man who radiates life and energy, as evident during our shoot at a quaint dance studio in San Juan, Manila. Dressed in a vibrant green shirt, black sweatpants, and a pair of running shoes, his attire perfectly matches his lively personality.

“I’m all about having a happy lifestyle—like all my friends know, I hate drama and stress,” Gumabao chuckles, revealing a commitment to joy and positivity.

Drama may be his forte onscreen, but in real life, he’s quick to dodge it. “My mental state or mental health is tied up with working out and my diet,” he confesses. “Honestly, it’s like my day is not complete when I don’t work out or do something for myself.”

Gumabao’s philosophy is rooted in action—keeping his body and mind active. “I enjoy being active—playing sports, trying new things, going on trips with friends, and embarking on outdoor adventures,” he shares with enthusiasm. The thought of being cooped up at home, not engaging in some form of physical activity, is anathema to him.

Looking after himself

Speaking of having an active lifestyle, Gumabao’s transformation from a rising star to one of the industry’s most sought-after actors hasn’t been without its fitness feats. In 2018, he secured his place as one of MEGA Man’s Best Bodies awardees, and the evidence is clear as he stretches and flexes during the shoot.

But Gumabao’s approach to fitness isn’t stagnant. “Super big change,” he emphasizes, recounting his shift from bodybuilding to calisthenics bodyweight workouts. His candor in sharing this evolution speaks volumes about his quest for improvement. “I’ve been doing bodybuilding-type workouts for the longest time, but then recently, I thought, ‘Yeah, my body looks good, but sometimes I feel weak.’”

Following this change, Gumabao says he feels more robust than ever. “Since the start of the year, I’ve been doing that, and I really feel the changes,” he says. “Even though I’m not as big as before, I feel stronger. It’s really just a matter of changing and experimenting with other workouts, techniques, and regimens.”

Gumabao dedicates one to two hours every day to his workouts, sometimes even doubling up on his sessions when time permits. The actor says his transition to calisthenics has not only made him feel stronger but also allowed him to explore new avenues of physical prowess.

Diet, too, plays a pivotal role in Marco Gumabao’s holistic approach to health. “Before, my diet was the conventional one—normal chicken breast and the typical crop foods. But recently, I tried intermittent fasting,” he says and reveals his eating window. “I usually eat at 12 noon and end at 8 PM.”

The significance of testosterone levels in baldness is still a topic of debate and curiosity among those who explore the causes of hair loss. To get some answers to these questions, MEGA Man sits down with Dr. Rafael Fortus. From the prevalent myths to the unquestionable truths, here is everything every man needs to know about this topic.

Testosterone and hair loss

Testosterone is essential for many bodily functions, from maintaining sex desire and sperm quality to promoting bone development and muscle growth. On the other hand, some men think that too much testosterone is to blame for their thinning hair. A popular belief that these two are linked stems from the fact that pattern baldness in men is far more prevalent than in women.

Crowning truths

Dr. Fortus responded right away, stating that testosterone levels have nothing to do with hair loss in men. However, he explained that this connection is made because testosterone is metabolized into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that destroys hair follicles and causes them to shed. The expert elaborated that it is DHT, not testosterone levels, that are to blame for balding.

Mane myths and misconceptions

According to the hair specialist, one of the most common myths is that since working out raises testosterone levels, which in turn raise levels of DHT, it speeds up hair loss. He pointed out that many athletes still have full heads of hair and most doctors would even recommend exercise for those who want to have a healthier scalp.

Dr. Fortus also debunked the notion that thinning hair can only be passed down through the female line. But he said that more than 40 genes, passed down from both parents, contribute to baldness. 

Lastly, the hair expert dispelled the myth that wearing hats cause hair loss and the belief that balding is mediated by one’s lifestyle. 

Real root causes 

According to him, androgenic alopecia is still responsible for 90% of male pattern baldness. He went on to explain that hair loss can also be caused by things like stress, smoking, crash diets, and infections, but only in a small percentage of people.

The power of hygiene

In order to maintain good hair, men should take care to keep their skin free of bacterial and fungal overgrowth. “After exercise and showers, it’s important to dry the skin completely, and to see an expert if you notice redness, spots or itch,” he recommended. 

Remedies available

Dr. Fortus mentioned minoxidil and finasteride as effective products to put off and even reverse the effects of thinning hair. Minoxidil acts by increasing blood circulation to the scalp and improving nutrition to the follicles, while finasteride prevents male pattern baldness by interfering with the conversion of testosterone to DHT.

Regarding the treatments, one of the things he suggested was the platelet mesotherapy (PMT), in which the patient’s blood is filtered to remove the platelets, and then they are reintroduced to the scalp through a mesotherapy device. 

He also highlighted hair transplantation, adding that today’s gold standard is called the direct hair implantation (DHI), in which follicular units are removed one by one and carefully replanted to achieve optimal density and a realistic appearance.

The expert’s insights

Dr. Fortus offered two easy bits of advice for males with this problem. First, it’s important to consult a doctor early on if you’re worried about hair loss, and second, while dealing with hair loss might be discouraging, there are now effective remedies that weren’t available a decade ago. For those experiencing this issue, he mentioned that they provide free consultations that include scalp examinations and pharmaceutical assistance.

Pablo, Ian Darcy 

Last but not least, Pablo surprised their followers by answering a fan’s inquiry about his cologne during a live broadcast. SB19’s “Pinuno’s” choice is an Ian Darcy fragrance. For those unfamiliar, this fragrance is a homegrown perfume label. While Pablo was not able to share his current specific scent preference, he did emphasize the significance of consistently adorning himself with a cologne, particularly for men who find themselves perspiring most of the time due to their active pursuits. He definitely showed that investing in one’s own well-being does not have to break the bank and that what really matters is how one portrays an aura of confidence and conviction.
