There’s this funny guy. He’s part internet entertainer, part conyo culture connoisseur, and all-around artistic dynamo. In TikTok, he voices SpongeBob and friends in a parody portrayal; he also does conyo skits in a not-so-parody portrayal. Comedy, after all, is art expressed through rather torrid experiences. And, yes, he is also an artist, influenced by characters he watched growing up, like Happy Tree Friends. He is the nephew of acclaimed artist Jose Tence Ruiz. There’s this funny guy. Maybe you know him—his name is Raco Ruiz.

From Childhood Creativity to Digital Stardom

Unlike a sudden epiphany or dramatic career shift, his path was one of playful exploration from an early age. “It was always just something I found fun as a child,” Ruiz reflects. From commandeering his father’s camcorder for stop-motion videos to starring in his productions due to a lack of available actors, his penchant for expression was innate. “I can’t remember a time in my life where I wasn’t doing it,” he admits with a chuckle, amused by his assumption that everyone shared his passion for art. 

Enrolling in a Communication Arts course at De La Salle University proved to be a pivotal moment, despite its non-visual arts focus. Here, Ruiz discovered new avenues for his talents, serving as the go-to artist for group projects and delving into comic book illustrations for the school paper. “I could use my voice more for stuff or I could also use my art to make people laugh,” he realized, expanding his creative horizons beyond traditional artwork. The pandemic, however, catapulted Ruiz’s content creation endeavors to new heights. What began as a leisurely pursuit on TikTok blossomed into a full-fledged career, offering an escape from the confines of his corporate job and ultimately becoming his primary source of income.

The Heart of Humor, the Soul of Art

Ruiz’s heart leans towards humor, but with a twist. “I don’t like being identified as a comedian,” he asserts, preferring the title of a “professional fun-haver”, The pressure of constantly delivering laughs doesn’t sit well with him, as he fears the weight of expectations that come with the label. Instead, Ruiz revels in the joy of simply having fun and creating content that reflects his animated spirit.

However, if his humor touches his heart, art touches his soul. Ruiz finds solace and satisfaction in the process. “The art is more fulfilling because the process is longer and I get to pour more of my soul into it without having to please everyone.” With art, he expresses frustrations and truths that may not find a place in his comedic endeavors. Unlike the constant need to entertain and please with his TikToks and Reels, creating art allows Ruiz to be his authentic self, unburdened by external expectations.

Mixing Morbidity and Merriment

Ruiz speaks passionately about the impact his Uncle Jose has had on him both as an individual and as an artist. “Every time I’d go to his exhibits with my family, I would see he’s using popular culture and mixing it with morbid ideas of social commentary blended into it,” he reflects. “I found it cool.” Witnessing his uncle’s approach left an impression on Ruiz, inspiring him to explore his own distinct themes in his artwork.

While Ruiz is careful not to emulate his uncle’s style out of respect, he acknowledges the subtle influence his uncle’s work has had on his endeavors. “The flavor I think I add to that is I just make it look happy.” Despite the dark themes, Ruiz suffuses his artwork with a sense of absurdity—one that is highly appreciated. 

There’s Always Funny in the Fight

The artist’s specific aesthetic and his ability to invest personal experiences into his work stem from a combination of factors, including his health struggles. “As much as I hated going through this as a teen, I think it shaped my perspective on life,” he recalls, referring to the autoimmune sickness that plagued his youth. 

“You know how they say pressure makes diamonds? I’d like to think, ‘Okay, that was my pressure moment.’ Because of that, I was always forced to look at life. I was like, ‘If I’m going to be happy about stuff, I need a way to cope.'” he clarifies. “I would draw violent cartoons in my notebook.” The image of him hunched over his sketches—channeling his inner turmoil onto the page—paints a poignant picture of soundness. “But,” he adds, his laughter carrying a warmth that belies the gravity of his words, “of cartoony animals going through painful situations. In a way, I would view myself as that cartoony animal going through pain.”

The constant physical pain he endured compelled him to find coping mechanisms, leading him to draw violent cartoons as a form of catharsis. Through humor, he found a way to helm his difficulties and see the funny side of life, refusing to succumb to self-pity.

The Unintended Effects of Nostalgia and Comfort

His aesthetic, characterized by bold, cartoonish elements with eye-catching colors, is heavily influenced by his upbringing in the ‘90s skateboarding culture, as well as his exposure to iconic cartoons like Looney Tunes. Additionally, growing up surrounded by sisters and being primarily surrounded by girls in his social circles introduced him to a world of Lisa Frank, Bratz dolls, and glittery aesthetics. This juxtaposition of masculine and feminine influences has shaped Ruiz’s palette.

Ruiz shares instances where his art, intended to evoke introspection or shed light on dark themes, pleasantly surprised viewers by eliciting feelings of nostalgia and comfort instead. In one exhibit, where his paintings depicted cartoon characters engulfed in flames to represent his difficult childhood, viewers found solace in the familiarity of the imagery, reminiscing about their own childhoods. Similarly, in another exhibit highlighting the detrimental effects of commercialism on children, with characters morphed to appear distressed and monstrous, viewers found comfort in the nostalgia of the artwork rather than focusing on the intended social commentary.

While Ruiz’s initial intention was to provoke deeper thought and awareness about societal issues through his art, he finds solace in the unexpected resonance his work elicits. “Even if that wasn’t my intention, that’s heartwarming,” he shares with a smile, his eyes alight with a mix of surprise and contentment. The genuine warmth in his voice emphasizes the impact of his creations, even when they diverge from their intended purpose. “At least it’s making them happy.”

Comedic Compassion

Ruiz approaches comedy with a thoughtful and considerate mindset, recognizing the importance of the balance between humor and sensitivity in today’s landscape. He adheres to a personal rule of avoiding making fun of other people’s disadvantages. Instead, his humor tends to poke fun upwards, targeting the elite and traditional stereotypes of hyper-masculinity, while refraining from mocking physical disabilities or other personal hardships.

Where sensitivity to offensive content is heightened, Ruiz acknowledges the need for comedians to adapt to the evolving world. He rejects the notion that comedy is dead, but rather believes it is transforming to align with societal sensitivities. “There are already so many hateful things going on. I don’t want to add to making fun of people who are having a hard time. That’s why if you’ll notice with my humor, I never make fun of anything physical, like physical disadvantages of people. Never. I don’t want to make fun of that.” 

To ensure that his content remains respectful and inclusive, especially during his early stages on TikTok, Ruiz seeks feedback from his Gen Z sister. By running potential skit ideas by her and listening to her perspective, he gains insight into what may be considered offensive or hurtful, allowing him to adjust his jokes accordingly to be more light-hearted and funny, rather than potentially harmful.

Ruiz’s comedy is deeply rooted in his own lived experiences and observations, allowing him to create relatable and humorous content that reflects the quirks and idiosyncrasies of everyday life. He draws heavily from personal experiences and conversations with friends to inform the content he produces in his comedy skits. His own social circles serve as inspiration for many of his comedic scenarios, embodying exaggerated versions of them in his skits. For instance, his conyo series originated from observations of friends who, despite their outwardly tough appearance, revealed themselves to be soft-hearted romantics underneath.

Similarly, his satire of elite kids in some of his content stems from encounters he’s had with individuals who exhibit privileged behavior. Rather than harboring animosity towards them, Ruiz finds humor in the absurdity of their actions and speech. By sharing these experiences through his comedy, he aims to highlight the ridiculousness of certain behaviors rather than incite hatred.

His Future of Fun

Ruiz approaches the future with a flexible mindset, recognizing that new ideas and opportunities will present themselves unpredictably. While he currently enjoys success with his conyo content, he remains open to evolving and exploring new avenues for creativity. Rather than feeling constrained by labels like “comedian”, he prefers to focus on creating content that he finds genuinely amusing and engaging, regardless of specific genre or format. “I’m riding the wave while people find it funny. But eventually, I’ll think of something new that I find funny, that I can share with the world.”

The artist’s aspirations center around fostering a sense of happiness and connection with his audience, whether through his comedic skits, his artwork, or any future endeavors with authenticity as his compass. “I hope to just continue making people happy with my content. That’s all.” They say the grass is greener on the other side, but for Raco Ruiz, his grass is just fine.

The grandson of National Artist of Visual Arts Francisco V. Coching, referred to as the “King of Komiks”, becomes not only a bearer of his family’s esteemed legacy, but also a torchbearer of innovation.

Flowing through Waves

“My new collection is called Traverse,” Marco Coching begins, his voice as adventurous as a balloon caught in a playful breeze. “Yung trademark ko talaga ay metallic waves—the sky meets the sea.” The artist paints his vision where the boundaries between earth and sky blur into a duet of color and form, where the horizon serves not as a sharp divide, but as a line highlighting distinct elements. It’s a canvas where each component, when brought together, forms a cohesive whole, yet retains its luminance even when separated.

Yet, why Traverse? Is there a method to this journey, a purpose of this relentless search? “Yung waves ko ay more fluid na siya. I’m still growing. Meron pa akong ideas na pwedeng gawin.” His response carries a sense of evolution, portraying his ideas as continuous in their exploration and elevating with its expansion. It’s a dynamic nature of creation, where new ideas and techniques propel the artist forward on a changing path of discovery—an essential element when one wants to stand on their own. Coching finds himself flowing through waves.

Courage, Conviction, and Coching

Speaking of standing on their own, we must acknowledge the guiding influence of those who pave the way for our artistic endeavors. Family constructs the bridge and leaves breadcrumbs for us to navigate their world, thereby enriching it with each step we take. For Coching, this guiding figure was his ancestor, Francisco V. Coching. As he discusses the influence of his grandfather, the artist’s response is both poignant and introspective. “Before I used to do illustrating. Pero hindi ko magaya, kasi sobrang galing ng lolo ko,” he reflects.

When an artist creates art, they draw upon their experiences to sustain and fulfill their expressions of identity. After all, the uniqueness of art lies in its deeply personal nature—it is a reflection of the artist’s innermost thoughts, emotions, and vulnerabilities. In bravely sharing these aspects of themselves with the world, they engage in a profound battle, transforming their struggles and triumphs into powerful works of art. This authenticity imbues their creations with a sense of depth, inviting viewers to connect on a visceral level to their introspection and discovery. In essence, we also influence.

Influence is regarded as a foundational force that is a catalyst: prompting artists to explore new territories, experiment with novel techniques, and challenge established norms. Yet, while external influences may leave their mark on their work, it’s the internal dialogue—the interplay between personal experiences, emotions, and aspirations—that defines their identity. 

In truth, no matter the familial ties or shared bloodlines, one cannot replicate another; they breathe, act, feel, and traverse their distinct paths. In some ways, individuals are like islands, complete in their uniqueness yet interconnected through shared experiences, forming an archipelago of ideas—each stroke of paint contributing to the collective with courage and conviction. “Nag-ibang direction, naging abstract painting,” Coching accentuates his transition towards abstract art to his autonomy.

At times, we grapple with a fear of solitude, of standing alone as islands in a vast sea of existence, hesitant to venture into the depths of self-discovery. Yet, it is in these moments of solitude that we have the opportunity to carve our own identities, distinct and unique from those who came before us. It’s essential to recognize that solitude does not equate to loneliness, but rather to strength—the strength to chart our own course, to explore the uncharted territories of our creativity, and to adopt the fullness of our individuality. For Coching, his island is the formation of an artist separate from his grandfather.

The Spirit of His Lineage

Abstract ideas serve as the cornerstone of Coching’s artistic endeavors, enriching his works and allowing them to flourish independently. Whether with oil, aluminum, or matte, artists like Coching have the power to construct entire worlds from their imagination. When created effectively, these creations have an intense impact on viewers. Indeed, the core of his art arises from the complex relationship of colors and forms, generating emotions and prompting reflection in people who see it. In this sense, Coching and artists like him raise the act of creating into a spiritual experience.

“I want them to recognize na wala ako katulad, na ako lang meron ganito,” Coching declares. “Before, may sinasabi sa akin na gaya-gaya lang ako. Medyo tumatak sa akin na kailangan iba yung gawa ko.” He reflects on past criticisms that his work was derivative, which left a lasting impression on him and fueled his determination to create something distinctively his own.

The discourse surrounding accusations of imitation spurred him to chart a unique course. “Hanggang ngayon, tumatak sa akin ‘yun,” Coching acknowledges. “Nasaktan ako noon, so I used it as motivation to work harder, to discover new ideas, bagong techniques.” It’s this critical engagement, often originating from family, that cuts the deepest—for a child to look up to their creator is akin to asking God if they were ever worthy, only to feel overlooked. “Lumabas naman siya.”

But as God is also a creator, we are confronted with the immutable reality of our existence—the intertwining of divine inspiration and human endeavor, the line between creation and creator. It is a moment of revelation, where the earthly and the divine come together in meditation, and we are left to ponder the mysteries of our existence. We become God, and we cannot be compared to others.

“The bloodline is still there. The legacy of my grandfather is ongoing, and I hope it doesn’t stop. We’re proud of Marco; he’s evolving, and getting better and better. His works are sold out in one exhibit. People are starting to notice his art,” his brother Francisco Coching III affirms, encapsulating the enduring spirit of their artistic lineage and Coching’s rising prominence.

His father Arnel Coching remarks, “My dad, of course, he’s a National Artist, one of the best, and here comes Marco—his style is modern art, he projects something different. He has something deeper. Marco grew up with my dad. Siguro, he picked up something. He’s evolving,” his father acknowledges his son’s unique voice and the influence of their family’s rich line. After all, there’s another artist in the family, one who can further sculpt his place in the Coching line. 

The Whole Sea

Navigating the maze of identity, one must sidestep the snares of comparison and unearth a niche as distinct as a wave. Is Coching his own wave? “Actually, yes,” Coching proclaims, traversing from galleries to collectors, who recognize his strengths. He embraces his identity beyond the shadows of his legacy. “Kailangan ko pag-galingan. Kailangan ko magimprove pa,” he acknowledges. Like countless artists, he understands the necessity of growth, but unlike many, he actively pursues it.

What lies ahead for Marco Coching? “I want to be more recognized,” he declares. When people say they want to create art, believe them. When artists say they don’t want to be famous because of it, they’re lying. “Mas makikita pa nila bagong works ko. Gagawa ko pa ng something new.” With confidence, he treads across drops of water, each step a ripple in the undying currents of creativity. As the tide of recognition swells, he remains anchored in his passion, poised to reveal even greater depths of his abilities. Maybe he’s not a wave, but the whole sea.

As you step into Miguel Romulo’s place, you’re greeted by a wide-open space that feels both roomy and carefully curated. It’s not cluttered, but every corner holds something special that catches your eye. It’s what his girlfriend, content creator Rei Germar, teasingly calls a “man cave” or a typical bachelor pad. Look around, and you’ll see his unit adorned with contemporary artwork, Bearbrick toys, and skateboards, among other things. While the team is setting things up for the shoot, Romulo, out of nowhere, casually asks, “Do you watch anime?”—a simple question that peels back a layer of his personality.

Where it all began

“I started collecting toys at an early age,” he reflects. “I think my taste for it just evolved overtime, from anime figures to hot toys and now to more collectibles like Bearbrick. Maybe this is me healing my inner child.” Romulo takes a trip down memory lane, sharing that at 12, he began doodling and displaying his anime-inspired drawings in his room. At the time, it was merely a pastime, but little did he anticipate that these childhood pursuits would stay with him indefinitely.

Romulo has certainly had a genuine affinity for various art forms. Some of his fond memories include borrowing his dad’s vintage Canon camera for travel snapshots. College also marked a pivotal phase, where he pursued communication arts, nurturing an intensified passion for films and photography. “Now, I’m happy I get to see different parts of the world while appreciating art and immortalizing memories through photos,” he says. Over time, his interests widened, guiding him toward the world of paintings. “I’ve grown to love paintings and slowly acquired pieces that caught my attention. So I guess my passion for art was a gradual thing that is still currently evolving.”

Painting pursuits

In a defining moment, the 28-year-old gentleman vividly remembers deciding to take his painting collection seriously. “I was watching a YouTube video of G Dragon’s apartment tour,” he recalls. “I was fascinated by how well-curated his place is. I love how every piece is so unique, but somehow they all go together. His entire place is a reflection of his personality.” 

He currently owns paintings by Filipino artists. “I got my first painting online,” he shares. “I came across Arvin Santos’s page and instantly liked his works and got a painting named ‘Imaginary World.’ Then, I visited the Modern and Contemporary Art Festival back in 2022 and got ‘Medusa’ by Anne Barless under Secret Fresh Gallery. Lastly, ‘Rizal 1’ by Raymond Guevarra was actually gifted to me by my girlfriend and I believe it’s from Modeka Art.” 

Clearly inclined toward contemporary pieces, he points to “Imaginary World” by Arvin Santos as the one that resonates with him the most. “My mind is often cluttered, thinking about too many things at once—Santos’s piece hit me right away,” he explains.

The poetry of paint

“When I saw Dead Poets Society as a little boy, I knew art would play a big role in my life. It isn’t necessarily a film about art, but there was a line that John Keating said that informed how I looked at life; ‘Medicine, law, business, engineering—these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, and love—these are what we stay alive for.’” Somera starts our conversation by reflecting on this moment, recalling the time when he realized his path would involve creating and evolving with art. He also talks about the day he came across a Mark Rothko painting in New York City, which was a turning point that showed him how vast the world of art could be. “I knew that this was the kind of beauty I wanted to breathe life into—a kind of visual poetry that transcends the structure of language and, in some cases, logic and reason,” he says.

Brushing across mediums

Prior to fully embracing painting, Somera shares that he delved into diverse creative pursuits, from filmmaking to creative writing, and even ventured into space design. He mentions that the idea of turning his love for painting into a profession wasn’t something he anticipated. Yet, fate always has its peculiar way of nudging us toward avenues that rekindle our enthusiasm for life.

Reflecting on his feature in international magazines, the artist expressed his feelings as “delightful and unexpected.” Somera discloses that the opportunity unfolded when a features editor, responsible for curating art for the gallery section of British Vogue, discovered his Instagram page. An email followed, inquiring about featuring his artwork. “I had to do some digging to make sure the inquiry was legitimate, and to my surprise, it was,” he shares. Subsequently, another editor from Vanity Fair noticed the feature and reached out, offering another chance for international exposure. Despite these accomplishments, the Filipino artist maintains a humble demeanor, just genuinely appreciating the recognitions. “I’m rather new to the art scene—up until now, I couldn’t even say with absolute confidence that I’m a ‘professional artist.’ I just like saying, ‘I make art for a living.’ So to be recognized by prestigious international publications is both humbling and empowering,” he states.

Revealing another layer of himself, the artist admits that he hasn’t completely conquered his impostor syndrome. However, he underscores the significance of acknowledgments, particularly for artists like himself, in teaching the value of infusing passion into everything. He reflects, “If there’s one thing this taught me, it’s that if something is made out of love, it will get recognition. It doesn’t matter if it’s from a stranger who walks past a secluded gallery in which your piece is being showcased or from an international audience—if it’s a labor of love, it will resonate with someone, and if you believe you have the capacity to affect even a single person, a single soul, with your art, you have to keep making it.” 

His most memorable work

Having built up an impressive collection of artworks, we asked about Somera’s favorite. Clearly grappling with the decision, he expressed the difficulty, likening his work to that of his own children. However, he highlighted a particular piece that held special significance—it was created during one of the lowest points in his life. Reflecting on that challenging period, he shares, “I was going through a crisis, and when this happens, I usually try to immerse myself in nature because I find that it calms me down. I was on a flight to Indonesia and as I stared from my window into the large ocean beneath me, I thought, ‘Man, I’m just a teeny tiny speck in the vast expanse of this world, this universe; how could I be worrying about such trivial things?’” It reminded him of the smallness of his worries. The desire to capture this epiphany led him to paint—not the expansive ocean visible below, but the emotion that descended upon him as he peered through that window, transforming that introspective sentiment into a compelling piece of artwork.

Merging artistic visions

Looking ahead, the future holds a vibrant and thrilling journey for the Filipino artist, filled with exciting plans. Besides sharing ongoing discussions about local and international exhibitions, he envisions stepping into the intersection of art and fashion. “I’ve yet to figure out how to do that, whether to learn new fashion-related skills or to collaborate the way Yayoi Kusama did with Louis Vuitton or Damien Hirst with McQueen. That’s still far down the line, but it’s definitely in the pipeline because I love fashion—I love art you live your life in,” he mentions.

Art has its own path 

As our conversation came to an end, Somera imparted a crucial message to fellow artists: embrace your unique style and create art for yourself. He expounds, “This, I learned, is how you find your voice. I can’t recall how many times people have told me, ‘Add a pop of color,’ ‘You should add more of this,’ ‘Change that.’ If I had heeded every unsolicited comment I’d ever received, I never would have arrived at the style I have now.” He emphasizes the importance of having confidence in your taste and avoiding the trap of creating art solely to please others. At the core of it all, Somera’s belief is that, come what may, your art will naturally align with those who connect with it, discovering its intended audience.

In an exclusive interview with MEGA Man, he walks us through the kickoff of his NFL career, his genuine love for the Philippines, and his move to set up a foundation to make meaningful contributions to various local communities.

His quest to score big

Bynum’s connection with football runs deep, tracing its roots back to his upbringing. He shares how, from a young age, the sport held a special place in his heart, evolving from a simple interest to a driving force behind his goals. Fondly recalling his grade school days, he shares, “I was looking at my yearbook and I had a thing written on it that says, When I am older, I want to be an NFL player and a doctor.” Despite the seeming innocence of these childhood dreams, Bynum tackled them with a genuine commitment, even dedicating a semester to pre-med studies. Although his ambition to become a doctor has not yet been fulfilled, he nevertheless feels grateful and proud for achieving his ultimate goal of joining the National Football League.

Reflecting on his NFL journey’s inception three years ago, he shares, “Going into the 2021 draft, I was picked in the 4th round. I was just super grateful to get picked overall.” During that time, he mentions that the specific team wasn’t his primary concern; rather, the real game, as he puts it, unfolds post-draft. The 25-year-old athlete also opens up about the initial challenging months, acknowledging the stress of finding the right balance and the pressure of earning playing time. And he is thankful that his efforts didn’t go to waste.

Pride in the paint

Bynum’s love for his country reveals itself in multiple ways. Whether it’s the Philippine flag boldly displayed on his helmet or the frequent on-field photos showcasing our country’s national banner, he ensures that his Filipino identity is a constant companion throughout every game. When prompted to explain the source of this affection, the Filipino-American athlete underscores the importance of representation. Crediting Manny Pacquiao as a pivotal inspiration, he remarks, “I’m in a professional sport now and it’s my responsibility to carry that torch because he inspired me back when he was fighting, and now I see that I can be that for somebody else. It made me realize that it’s a big deal that people really care and support when they see one of their own doing something.”

Better late than never

At first glance, one might assume that Bynum’s strong bond and deep admiration for the Philippines are tied to his personal experiences in our land. However, in an interesting confession, he reveals that he only got a glimpse of the Philippines two years ago. His initial visit occurred in 2022, just before he exchanged vows with his now-wife last year. Bynum expresses a touch of sadness, explaining that despite harboring a long-standing desire to visit his homeland, the financial challenge of saving up for a trip proved daunting, particularly with a large family. Still, he underscores that during his formative years, he never felt a disconnect from his Filipino values, given the ample time spent with Filipino relatives in the U.S. Yet, it was when he finally set foot in the country that his affection for his entire family, fellow Filipinos, and the nation deepened. Reflecting on the experience, he remarks, “Once you go out to the Philippines, you realize, this is just like my family; it’s all the same. It’s crazy to see that even though we’re on the other side of the world, those values still carry over and we’re all the same as people back at home.” 

“I was blown away by just how cool people are and how welcoming, nice, and friendly everybody is. That’s one thing you hear and see. But really, being able to experience it like everybody else is amazing. It’s really like a never-ending vacation; no matter where you go, every single place has its own fun thing.”

Built on Filipino dreams

The professional athlete reveals that beyond the desire to explore the Philippines, his dream has always involved making a positive impact. He attributes this vision to his wife’s association with a local church in the Philippines, dedicated to aiding fellow Filipinos in need. Bynum, even before arriving in the country, understood the significant repercussions of natural disasters on many Filipinos. He discloses that even his own family in the Philippines experienced being stranded in their homes during a strong typhoon. This frequently neglected issue, he emphasizes, propels him to launch his own foundation, the Bynum Faith Foundation.

Teaming up with the New Life Community Care Foundation, he actively conducts fundraising efforts to support feeding programs, Sunday school sessions, and disaster relief campaigns aimed at assisting Filipinos. He says that his goal is not just to make little changes but to contribute towards improving their way of life. Despite technically growing up in the U.S. and still residing there, he emphasizes that his heart remains deeply connected to his people.

When asked about his most memorable experience, he recalls helping landslide victims in Leyte. According to Bynum, this experience opened his eyes to the devastating effects of disasters in the Philippines. A year later, he had the opportunity to revisit the community he helped and was pleasantly surprised to witness their thriving state. Describing them as family, he notes their transformative journey from adversity to establishing farms and a flourishing food industry. Bynum underscores his current focus: “Continue to just be a blessing to others. Our biggest goal is to share our faith and show people God’s love.” He also adds, “But I would say objectively, we want to do bigger outreach. It is to help more people; we want to do longer-lasting things for people, whether it is providing clean water over the long term, whether it is through wells or filtration systems, or electricity for certain communities—just going big like that.”

Proud promise

As our conversation draws to a close, Bynum expresses his sincere thanks to Filipinos, emphasizing their love as something he can feel across borders. He points out that this kind of support serves as his motivation to become a better player with each passing day. In his closing statement, he pledges to his fellow Filipinos, stating, “I promise to always continue to support our people, work to just put us on the map, and show people that we can be successful in whatever realm we are, whether it’s sports, whether it’s medicine—I’ll continue to be an inspiration.”

Last but certainly not least on this year’s MEGA Man to Watch is none other than Diego Gutierrez, the son of Lotlot De Leon and Ramon Christopher Gutierrez. When he first stepped onto the shoot’s scene, you might mistake him for a reserved guy, just chilling in a corner, flashing a casual smile, and waiting for his turn in front of the camera. However, as we chatted with Gutierrez, we uncovered a lively, charming gentleman. Gutierrez, it turns out, is more than meets the eye—a man unafraid to switch things up and keep growing beyond his comfort zone.

“I have always loved basketball,” he promptly shares when asked about his childhood passion. After completing his studies in integrated marketing at the University of Asia and the Pacific, his love for the game led him to the professional basketball arena. From scoring for the Quezon City Defenders in the National Basketball League to making moves with Imus Bandera in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League, it seemed like the court held a bright future for him. Yet, despite still enjoying the game today, he expresses that he seeks a different rhythm in his pursuits.

Dunking to a different beat

The former professional athlete revealed that in 2020, during the height of the pandemic, he had the opportunity to delve deeper into a different passion of his: music. “I have always loved music, ever since I was a kid,” he admits. He also mentions that while he genuinely enjoyed his run in professional basketball, one day, a sudden thought hit him: “Why haven’t I taken music seriously?” Surrounded by applause from loved ones who have recognized his musical prowess, Gutierrez says he’s ready to get going on a new score.

When asked about his musical style, Gutierrez keeps it real, saying it’s a blend of everything from pop to R&B and all that falls in between. He tips his hat to artists like Justin Bieber, Shawn Mendez, John Mayer, and The 1975 as some of his influences. Taking a trip down memory lane, he reminisces about his college days when he penned his first song, “On a Dream.”  Despite the growth in his musical journey, that initial track, according to the singer, still hits a special note for him, especially since he composed it with a friend from way back in grade school.

Almost across borders

Our chat took a surprise turn into international waters as he opened up about his career in music. In 2019, before getting serious about his tunes during the pandemic, he revealed that he actually inked a deal with Hitmakers Entertainment, a small indie label in Los Angeles. Grateful for the chance, even before he considered himself a serious musician, the said international label spotted his potential and whisked him off to the U.S. to record some songs. Yet, when he returned to the Philippines, all set to drop his album, the pandemic threw a wrench into his plans. Despite a tinge of sadness for the missed opportunity, Gutierrez, with a bit of grit, assures us that even though he’s technically not affiliated with the label anymore, he’s still tight with them and keeps the door open for those unreleased tracks. Regardless of the setback, his musical hustle continues, navigating through challenges like the seasoned player that he is.

Star-studded support

In his pursuits, whether he’s dribbling on the court or playing a chord, Gutierrez credits his family for always having his back. “Ever since I was a kid, my parents would just tell me to go for what I wanted to do,” he shares. He also beams while talking about his three sisters, whom he calls his ultimate cheerleaders, both on and off the court. “Every time they watch me, sila talaga ‘yung mga pinakamalakas sumigaw,” Gutierrez adds with a grin. When it comes to his music, he mentions that his grandmother, Pilita Corales, is his silent but significant supporter. With just a simple smile, she instantly makes him feel like an accomplished artist every time he shows her his new songs and music videos. For those nerve-wracking pre-performance moments, he shares that he turns to his sister, Janine Gutierrez, for advice and a confidence boost. According to him, Janine would always say, “They could have asked so many other people to sing there but they chose you.”

Now, in this new groove of his career, he’s working hard to unleash all his compositions and eventually release his debut album. To top it all off, he drops hints that his listeners can expect a new song from him by saying, “So, may inaayos na. Malapit na.” He also gives a big thanks to his fans who stayed in the game, supporting him even when he couldn’t drop a song last year. “It is very humbling and flattering that people still listen to my music,” he adds. With this steadfast determination, a fearless spirit for trying out new sounds, and most importantly, staying grounded, Diego Gutierrez seals the finale of our MEGA Man to Watch series this year, proving that he is definitely one to keep an eye on.

Little scorer, big dreams

One striking fact about the 23-year-old gentleman is his love for football. This passion, rooted in his early years, has grown and evolved with time. “I’ve always liked playing the sport. My idol growing up was Cristiano Ronaldo. I used to watch his videos on YouTube and try to recreate his moves in my grandmother’s garden,” Rosales reminisces. Now, in his more mature years, he shares that he also loves supporting Sergio Ramos. Narrating his journey, the young athlete reveals that his formal training commenced when his mom enrolled him in the KAYA Futbol Club Academy. Since then, he has been sharpening his skills and evolving as a player. Proudly, he shares his current participation with the men’s team at Davao Aguilas Football Club.

“My greatest achievement in football is being part of the Davao Aguilas Football Club and we reached the finals of the recently concluded Copa Paulino Alcantara.”

End zone escapes 

Going beyond his enthusiasm for football, our conversation with Rosales exposes a relatable side that aligns him with every other man. “I’ve always loved cooking and eating good food,” he reveals with a smile. Dipping his toes into the world of collecting, he’s also gradually building a collection that includes cars, fragrances, and the care of exotic fish. Not to mention, he’s been expanding his horizons on other sports lately, specifically golf.

From field to frame 

In Santino Rosales’s world, another distinctive trait is his commitment to modeling. Contrary to what other people might think that it was his dad that influenced him to pursue this field, Rosales shares that it was actually his mom. “I got into the industry because my mom used to be a professional model as well. I guess seeing her previous works and watching her teach people how to model sparked my interest in it.” With a modeling stint of 7 years, he labels the journey as “an amazing experience.” When asked about his favorite memory so far, he stumbles for words, confessing that he genuinely cherishes every opportunity. But if he needs to choose one, he picks his first ever show, where he walked for Filipino designer Avel Bacudio. This instance holds special significance to him because it opened the door to many opportunities that led him to collaborate with some of the country’s most gifted designers, an experience he appreciates with deep gratitude.

“It has been enriching in more ways than one. It has definitely helped me with my character development. I would love to continue working in this field, especially because the fire in me is still burning and yearning for more experience.”

Before bidding farewell, he expressed his deep gratitude to both his parents. “I’ve always been goal-oriented, thanks to my upbringing so I never really felt any pressure to succeed from my parents but rather from myself. My parents create the best environment for me to do what I love by continuously showing me love and support and letting me know that they are proud of me,” he shares with genuine warmth.

Moving forward

We took a moment to talk about one of the recurrent questions thrown at him—his plans to step into the entertainment industry. With an earnest smile, Rosales provides a candid and direct response, saying, “The answer is simple: it never was and it never will be.” Furthermore, he shares that he finds immense satisfaction and equal determination in exploring other avenues, such as fueling his passions in football, modeling, and entrepreneurship.

Looking ahead, the young gentleman shares his aspirations, saying, “I hope to continue improving in my football and modeling career but aside from that, I also want to get into trading. It is also in my plans to create businesses and broaden my investment portfolio in the years to come.” As he outlines his future endeavors, he proves his worth as a MEGA Man to Watch. Who knows, perhaps he’ll secure a spot on the national football team or secure an international modeling project? Or perhaps he’ll venture into launching his own business. The early act

Starting out as a member of Gimme 5 in 2013, Grae Fernandez embarked on his career journey at a young age. Reflecting on the road he’s traveled since then, the actor opens up about his deep-seated passion for performing. Taking us back to his grade school days, he paints a picture of his first choir performance, where, in his own words, he felt like a “rockstar.”

Fast forward to August 2014, and Fernandez took a leap into the world of acting with a role in “Perfecto,” an episode within the fantasy-drama comedy anthology Wansapanataym. This marked the initial step that paved the way for a series of acting gigs. “I just fell in love with acting,” he shares, encapsulating the heart of a thriving career now spanning over a decade.

“I love creating stories,” Fernandez affirms when describing his identity as an actor. To him, acting goes beyond the mere recitation of lines or showing up on set. Miranda jumped into our conversation with a personal story, tracing the roots of his motorcycle passion back to childhood memories with his dad. At the age of four or five, he would wander alongside his father, gripping the motorcycle handle with guidance. “Every time susunduin niya ‘yung nanay ko, sumasama ako kasi ganoon na naman ang aking gagawin,” he recounts. The big moment came at 14, when he took drove a manual motorcycle for the first time. The initial excitement was undercut by fear when the engine stalled, prompting a struggle to reignite it, but he shares that thankfully, a helping hand from a tricycle driver saved the day. It might not have been a flawless ride, but for the actor, it was a lesson in resilience on the road.

Reflecting on his modest beginnings and down-to-earth demeanor, he recalls the joy of acquiring his very first dirt bike, a Honda CRF150L. He beams as he reveals that he hadn’t fully paid for it initially, putting in extra effort on his showbiz projects to settle the balance. In an exclusive interview with MEGA Man, the director delves into his humble beginnings, the process that went into producing the show, and the thrilling surprises in store for his audience.

Behind the lens

“Mahilig na ako manood ng pelikula dati pa, pero hindi ko alam na pwede siyang career,” Villegas confesses when asked about his start in the industry. Reflecting on his high school days, he reminisced about being required to join an organization, ultimately opting for their school’s photography club. It was during this time that his passion for photography soared, especially after receiving his first SLR from his dad. Transitioning to college, uncertain about his path, he stumbled upon a production class where the discovery of a director of photography production role struck him. He also shares that enrolling in a class led by Marilou Diaz-Abaya, where he was tasked with shooting short films, marked the turning point, fueling his ever-growing passion for cinematography.

When it comes to donning the director’s hat, Villegas reveals that it was all about the unplanned and unexpected. Becoming a director was never part of his grand scheme, but deep down, directing a feature film was a longstanding item on his bucket list. It wasn’t until 2010 that he checked off that goal, helming, producing, and handling cinematography for Mayohan, an entry at Cinemalaya. Fast forward to 2014, fate threw him an unexpected curveball, offering him the chance to direct English Only Please, an official entry at the Metro Manila Film Festival. Villegas clarified that the opportunity was originally intended for his partner, director Antoinette Jadaone, but due to her hectic schedule, she couldn’t take on the project. Villegas, seizing the moment, made the most of the opportunity and even clinched the Best Director Award that year.

Diverse horizons

This filmmaker has certainly covered a significant amount of ground. Now navigating through various roles, transitioning from director to producer while maintaining his role as a cinematographer, Dan emphasizes that he sees each role as equally challenging and vital. With genuine excitement, he shares his anticipation of returning as DOP soon, hoping his skills are still up to par.

On directing the series

Villegas sums up his response when offered Replacing Chef Chico in a single word: “Pressured.” He mentions there was no moment of hesitation as crafting these narratives aligns with his passion, yet he acknowledges feeling a weight of responsibility. While it is still a labor of love, he acknowledges feeling under pressure to make sure that Netflix’s first Filipino series would not only appeal to a wide audience but, more importantly, resonate with Filipinos.

He added that the initial concept, credited to Antoinette Jadaone, originally portrayed Piolo’s character as a food critic, but they decided to pivot and cast him as a food consultant instead. Villegas went on to commend their scriptwriters for their invaluable contribution, acknowledging their role in effectively bringing the story to life and alleviating the initial pressure he experienced.

Cinematic feast 

During our interview with Sam Milby, the actor stressed the importance of not categorizing this as just another love story series. In addition, Dan Villegas wants audiences to perceive it as “all about Filipino food.” He passionately explains his intention to highlight the world-class quality of Filipino cuisine, going beyond the familiar adobo and lumpia. When asked about any personal connection, the director shares that it’s simply their mutual love for food with his partner that fueled the concept and expressed his delight at being able to share this culinary passion through the series.

Revved-up beginnings

“I remember that the first time I held a car key in my hands was at four years old.” Even though he cannot find the exact photo anymore, he vividly recalls wishing to turn 16 at that time so that he would be allowed to drive. “I just love how owning a car can make you feel independent and how it can take you to places that you’ve never been before. The whole idea of traveling on your own and being away from where you are—it’s very peaceful,” he explains. 

They say that every man has a soft spot for his first car, and for Reph Bangsil, it was far from the high-octane rides he’s known for now. His debut on the road? An old Jeep at 16. He recalls the days of squeezing eight or nine friends into it, admitting with a laugh, “I remember I wasn’t embarrassed of it at first, but eventually, I realized I can’t bring people on dates in this car. I need to have a proper one.” 

His collection 

A true testament to his love for wheels, Reph admits that he has owned up to nearly 30 cars. Currently, he’s cruising with a selective four: the Mercedes-Benz C-Class W204, a 2000 Mazda Miata MX-5, a 2002 Mitsubishi Evolution 7 GTA, and a 1974 Ford Maverick. 

Driven to create

The content creator shared that he looked up to various Western influencers’ talent for telling stories about cars, especially when they discuss how older vehicles pack character and personality that newer ones can’t match. This admiration began his content journey a decade ago, but he said that he believes that the real traction in his content only hit in 2017 and ignited more during the pandemic.

Outside content creation

Born into a family of entrepreneurs and professionals, Reph’s early ambitions leaned towards entrepreneurship. Yet, a taste of corporate life redirected his course. “I knew that I was good at speaking. That’s how I stumbled upon creating content,” he shares. Despite this, Bangsil reveals that he remains connected to his entrepreneurial side, overseeing various businesses today.

His proudest moments

Reflecting on his proudest moments, Reph recalls the thrill of driving the Nissan Almera with Nissan Philippines from Manila to Boracay—an exhilarating yet crazy adventure that left him beaming. Another highlight was Subaru flying him to Singapore for the Subaru Palm Challenge, an endurance battle where the final contender keeping their palm on the car emerged victorious, an experience Bangsil describes as “very magical.”

Steering creativity

“I’m actually not really too technical. I’m not the most perfect car reviewer. Everything I talk about comes from experience.”

Reflecting on a pivotal moment in 2021, he candidly admits to burnout from his automotive focus, leading to the sale of his cars and even getting into the world of motorcycles. As we wrapped up our chat, the young gentleman shares that his current aspirations extend beyond personal success; he aims to be a role model for other guys and hopes to achieve greater success to give back to his community. Indeed, it’s this drive to diversify and inspire that adds depth to his journey beyond just being a content creator.

This requirement, rooted in national defense and citizen discipline, transcends BTS’s temporary exit from the limelight. It symbolizes the group’s deep commitment to their homeland, a stance consistent with their global prominence. Even with the chance of exemption, the group chose to fulfill their duties, a decision underscored by BigHit Music’s statement, highlighting the honor they find in serving their country.

Pre-enlistment sentiments

The final quartet of BTS took a moment to bid farewell to their fans. RM, on Weverse, shared reflections on his decade with the group, expressing gratitude a day before his enlistment: “I was really happy to live as a BTS member over the past 10 years,” he noted. V shared his anticipation, saying, “Even though those I’ll be going to the military with may be younger than me, I think I’ll be able to learn new things.” Jung Kook, in a live session before enlistment, expressed gratitude for a busy but happy life, thanks to the fans. Finally, in a live broadcast, Jimin mentioned, “As we are going together, I’ll depend a lot on Jungkook. I’ll do my best and will come back healthy.”

The dates of their returns

Suga, Jimin, JK, RM, and V are anticipated to complete their military service and be discharged in June 2025. Jin, who commenced his military service last December, is expected to conclude his duties by June 2024. Simultaneously, J-Hope is anticipated to complete his military service and be discharged in October 2024. BigHit Music has disclosed their intentions for the group to fully resume activities as a septet in 2025, following the discharge of all members.

Nico shared that his latest venture into writing a book wasn’t an overnight thing. It took him about three years, with multiple starts and stops. He humorously expressed, “I don’t know how to write both in English and Spanish.” Yet, he tackled the challenge head-on.

As he was penning his book, Nico shared that he kept on pondering about two things: “Why am I doing this? What is the mission of the book?” According to him, these questions served as his compass. He stayed true to his purpose—to inspire kindness, not just romantically, but in general. He underscored that most of the time, it’s not about big gestures, but about showing respect and communicating clearly—a hint of what the book’s all about.

Mantras for men

The 40-year-old gentleman expressed that he is pumped up for guys to read his book, where he spills three solid lessons men can and should grab. To kick it off, he stresses the significance of consistently letting your partner know how important they are in your life.

Adding to the conversation, he emphasized the importance of quality time for anyone looking to keep their relationship flourishing. According to him, sometimes, the smallest moments carry more weight. Using his and Solenn’s busy routine as an example, they make it a priority to set aside time for catching up and meaningful conversations.

Mental, physical, heart, and soul—you need to give your all and fight for it, but sometimes things [still won’t] work, and it’s not wrong,” he explained. Nico emphasized that being loyal isn’t just sticking together, no matter what. It’s also about understanding that sometimes, you’re on separate paths, and that’s alright. You can still have each other’s backs while chasing your own dreams.

Jobert Lachica

At 18 years old, Jobert kicked off his dance journey and hasn’t looked back. Founder of Batobalani Artists Collective and Musketeers PH, he’s also a junior choreographer at UPeepz. Some of his noteworthy moments include dancing in Bullet Dumas’ concert, performing in DWTA’s “Santigwar” music video, and choreographing Jarlo Basé’s “Kalapati” and “Sisa” music videos. He also revealed that you can catch him in action on December 16 in the play Ang Mahiwagang Shoebox with some of the country’s top dancers.

“To be able to travel and witness different cultures is priceless enough. What more if you’re doing something you love and still experience that? [It] is just priceless for me.” This was the dancer’s response when asked what it is about dancing that brings him excitement. Meanwhile, his current dream involves collaborating with different artists beyond the dance community, aiming to bring dance into new and varied platforms.“I believe collaboration will go a long way and hopefully shows like that will be played in schools, big theaters, and international artists might join, too, in the future.” 

Aennon Tabungar

Aennon’s dance journey began in 2009 when being diagnosed with ADHD led him to explore activities matching his energy. Despite trying sports first, it was dance that truly clicked. Today, he is one of the heads the local dance group, TPM, as one of the senior choreographers and also the president, and on top of that, he also directs Bawz.

Reflecting on his achievements, he highlights two that stand out. Firstly, competing with his teammates at TPM locally and internationally since 2018 taught him to appreciate struggles and successes. Secondly, as a coach, seeing his students progress in both dance and life is a fulfilling accomplishment. As for his biggest aspiration at the moment, Aennon said that he really cannot think of any. “There’s a lot, to be honest, but what I can say is that until now, everything is still a dream. I am still an aspiring choreographer. Even with all the experiences and achievements, I humbly say that I still aspire to be better than I was today and yesterday. I still do have a lot to learn and witness.”

Joshua Decena

In addition to his popular style recommendations, Joshua Decena is making a name for himself with his dance videos. He kicked off his dance journey at 7 years old, after being inspired by his sister, before entering the scene when A-Team invited him to join two to three years ago.

Joshua reminisced about performing alongside local and international artists like Sarah Geronimo and Jessi as significant achievements. He also shared that prior to these experiences, he initially juggled a corporate job while dancing on the side, eventually turning it into a profitable endeavor. And when asked what his advice for aspiring dancers was? “Always keep trying.”

Dune Stephen Mondejar

Inspired by his older brothers, Dune started his dance journey at 8 years old. Now a key figure in Legit Status and Dancehall Manila Community, he’s also the founder and director of Train to Zion. Dune’s proudest moments include winning HHI Worlds and spreading his love for dancehall and hip-hop nationwide, with plans to extend his reach to neighboring Asian dance communities.

“Dancing really helped me a lot growing up, especially in an environment where you could end up in such troubling situations. It was just a hobby for me at first, but dance itself became a safe place for me to express myself and understand more things about my movement, culture, and purpose.” This is how Dune defined the personal meaning of dancing to him. Currently, his foremost goal is to impart a positive influence on the next generation, encouraging them to wholeheartedly pursue their dance passions. He shared that he aims to extend the help he received from dance and mentors to many others through his talent and vision.

Adam Alonzo

Adam initiated his formal dance journey in 2008 and has been going strong ever since. He co-founded TPM, securing back-to-back championships at Vibe Philippines as they represented the country in Vibe USA in 2018 and 2019. Recently, their team clinched 2nd place at Singapore’s Super 24 Competition 2023. Additionally, he serves as one of the choreographers for the P-Pop group, BGYO.

With numerous accomplishments as a dancer, Adam treasures the chance to teach and perform internationally to represent our nation.“I’ve had the chance to compete in the US and Singapore, and have been able to teach in Japan, US, Macau, Singapore, [and] India. It’s a humbling and fulfilling experience to be able to showcase my choreography, and also promote OPM through my pieces.” Using dance as a medium for personal expression and global connection, Adam mentioned that his primary goal is to continue showcasing his talent on the international stage through competitions and teaching.

Jesse Rafael

Starting in 2009, Jesse’s dance journey evolved from observing iconic teams, attending their workshops, to joining school and external dance groups. Currently, he’s a member of Legit Status, Dancehall Manila, and Musketeers PH. His notable achievements include securing a world championship and carrying the title of Dancehall King. “Dancehall is not just a dance style. It’s a beloved culture borrowed from Jamaica. Having that title gives me the purpose and responsibility of sharing the love and knowledge I have for the culture here in the Philippines and globally,” he shared.

In addition, he noted that dancing is highly meaningful in his life as the art form that sculpted his current identity. Apart from finding joy and using it for self-expression, dance served as a key refuge during tough times. With various exciting prospects on the horizon, Jesse openly shared his current core and sincere aspirations. “My first aspiration in dancing is to make everyone aware that our art form is not cheap, that we get the right standard we deserve, and one day, make the dream come true to make a consistent living out of it. Secondly, we all know how high the skill level and talent we have here in the Philippines, not just in the metro, but in the provinces, too. I hope that the government will see that dancers are athletes, too, and will finally have the interest to support and invest in these undeniable talents that will lead to worldwide recognition.”

A behind-the-scenes peek 

In addition to script work, Sam and his castmates underwent a week-long crash course with chefs to prepare for their roles. Prior to this, the actor humorously confessed to having minimal cooking know-how, proudly declaring, “I make some scrambled eggs and toast.” Despite his limited culinary background, he shared that he found the experience enjoyable, and it evidently contributed to his seamless performance in the series.

The 39-year-old expressed his gratitude to his fiancée, Catriona Gray, acknowledging her for nudging him to tune into Hell’s Kitchen, sparking an idea on how to shape his character. Sam, however, found Chef Chico more intense than Chef Gordon Ramsay. A beachside reunion

Our conversation began as Manuel revisited the beginnings of his friendship with Federico and Jigger. “We met in 2015 at another residency in Saint-Tropez.” During that experience, they had the opportunity of meeting Filipino artist Ian Giron. Fast forward eight years, Ian reached out to bring them together for another residency—this time, in the Philippines. He shared that he eagerly embraced the offer, excited not only to collaborate with old friends, but also to immerse himself in the beauty of the country. However, he expressed regret for missing the chance to meet Juan Perdiguero Trillo as Juan’s residency had concluded before his arrival.

Siargao’s spectrum

“It is a very special place. The local people really feel like a community—they are very friendly and welcoming.”

Manuel describes his impression of Siargao and its residents.

Living in Siargao, Manuel discovered himself enthralled by the island’s charming beauty—the people, the food, the weather, and the water. Yet, amidst it all, he pointed out, “Most importantly, it’s the colors.” These hues, vividly displayed in his works, carry profound meanings. The artist emphasized that these weren’t casual choices; they were the precise colors that entranced him during his weeks on the island, fostering a love for the place that is deep, authentic, and unquestionable.

A tropical masterpiece

Nestled in the gallery’s quiet corner, amidst Manuel’s watercolor paintings, is a piece that stands out—coconut shells cut in half. Interestingly, this holds a special place among Manuel’s favorites. He shared that these shells, polished and adorned with gold leaf, were his personally collected treasures from the beach. Drawn to transforming items with “insides” into art, he chose the coconut as a nod to Siargao’s presence. Although time-consuming, this artistic endeavor, according to Manuel, was worth every moment.

The value of art residencies

MEGA Man also had the chance to talk to Alelee Andanar, one of the key figures in bringing this residency to life. She credited her husband, Martin Andanar, for championing the idea, deeply rooted in his Siargao upbringing. Alelee said that she swiftly embraced the project when it surfaced, explaining simply yet profoundly, “You see life from a different perspective.” She shared that she finds joy in witnessing how people, especially foreign tourists, appreciate our beaches. For her, it’s a beautiful exchange that she hopes will ripple across borders.

Fueled by a deep commitment to harness the transformative power of art, Alelee shared their ongoing mission. Beyond sustaining art residencies and showcasing Filipino talent abroad, she and her partner aspire to carve a haven for art in Siargao—a gallery that echoes the island’s unexplored beauty. In her words, it’s about uncovering the hidden gems and inviting Filipino artists to find inspiration in its enchanting landscape.

Painting new horizons

As we wrapped up our conversation, Manuel shared something fascinating—despite crafting stunning art during his stay in Siargao, he only dipped into watercolors for the first time just a year ago. And just like his first ever visit to the Philippines, this fresh foray feels like an artistic voyage that resembles stepping onto a pristine shoreline, marking the start of something beautiful. It’s a thrilling moment, inviting us to witness the gentle tides of his creativity shaping the landscape of his evolving chapters.

His purpose was simple: to express his gratitude to the Filipino audience, who embraced his rendition of the iconic character of Roronoa Zoro. Just like many of us who take pleasure in simple yet satisfying meals, Mackenyu shared his love for good food. While his pre-show meal included hamburgers, the actor mentioned that it was the delightful experience of relishing a plate of chicken adobo the day prior that truly resonated with him. Aside from that, Anna Magkawas, the brand owner of Luxe Beauty and Wellness Group, shared with MEGA Man that Mackenyu has a soft spot for their Luxe Macchiato. His affection for the flavor was so evident that he couldn’t resist requesting extra packs, eagerly anticipating bringing more of his newest favorite drink back home.

On keeping things casual 

Denisse Laurel, the event’s host, couldn’t help but notice Mackenyu’s stylish yet understated fashion choices. For the occasion, the One Piece star effortlessly pulled off a classic combination: a white shirt, black trousers, and denim Louis Vuitton trainers. While he confessed to favoring this laid-back style, Mackenyu added a touch of refinement by adorning himself with a variety of gold accessories—earrings, rings, bracelets, and a necklace—perhaps paying homage to the role he played in the series. These easy and straightforward choices extended even to what was inside his bag, carrying just the staples—earphones, passport, and a wallet that contains a PHP 1,000 bill. 

Aware and appreciative

Upon learning about his upcoming visit to the Philippines, Mackenyu couldn’t help but express genuine excitement. More than just marking a milestone with his first fan meet outside Japan, he openly acknowledged the considerable popularity he enjoys in the Philippines. Citing the flurry of online comments and the impressive number of Filipino followers, Mackenyu confidently stated that, among the various Asian nations, he believes that his most significant and biggest fan base outside his home country lies right here in the Philippines.

From screens to screens

Much like many guys out there, Mackenyu proudly wears the badge of a certified gamer. However, he distinguishes himself by mastering the art of balance. Whether he’s out and about or chilling at home, he said that you’ll spot him carrying two phones, a move he explained as a way for him to ensure he can dive into gaming sessions with his friends. Yet, what sets him apart is his conscious effort not to let gaming consume all his time, emphasizing the importance of giving undivided attention to someone he’s engaged in a personal conversation with. In sharing his gaming preference, Mackenyu revealed Rainbow Six Siege as his favorite.

Fitness focus

The Japanese actor also talked about his daily grind that includes going to the gym six days a week, despite his demanding schedule. When it comes to his workout preferences, he gravitates towards the efficacy of cable machines, leveraging them to enhance both the flexibility and strength of his core. Sharing a detail of his dietary evolution, Mackenyu transitioned from a stringent filming diet to the current bulking phase, where he indulges in the pleasure of enjoying a variety of foods without restraint. Interestingly, he shared that his workouts serve as more than just physical exertion—they become a therapeutic escape, a form of self-care that aids him in stress release and pressure relief when facing life’s challenges.

His trusted companion

It’s often said that a dog becomes a man’s best friend, and Mackenyu’s experience wholeheartedly confirms this statement. Revealing a previous fondness for cats, the actor shared that his world transformed completely upon encountering his furry companion. He also shared a funny tidbit—his dog’s snoring habits, which often reaches thunderous levels that they disrupt his sleep at night. When asked about his response to these noisy midnight disturbances, he charmingly admitted to gently poking his dog and playfully quipping, “Hey! I can hear you.”

Comeback countdown

Concluding the event on a high note, Mackenyu left the stage with a pledge that echoed in the crowd—a commitment to return to the Philippines. Fast forward to the present, the two are now happily married, celebrating the arrival of their first child.

Migz Villafuerte

In an interview with Boy Abunda six years ago, Miss Universe Philippines 2017 Rachel Peters delved into her relationship with Congressman Migz Villafuerte. Rachel expressed gratitude for Migz’s support during her pageant endeavors, noting that he even assisted her in honing her question and answer skills through practice sessions. Managing the demanding schedules of pageantry and politics, the former beauty queen explained that they find balance by simply making time to support each other. This reciprocity was evident as she assisted Migz during his campaign, and he, in turn, supported her during her pageant ventures. Proving that love conquers all, Migz and Rachel have since tied the knot and joyfully welcomed two children into their lives.

Lloyd Lee 

Shamcey Supsup and Lloyd Lee’s love story unfolds as a remarkable example of destiny in action. Their paths crossed at the beauty queen’s 25th birthday and victory celebration in May 2011, where Lloyd accompanied his cousin, a Binibining Pilipinas candidate who competed alongside Shamcey. Adding a touch of fate, Supsup shared in an interview that her birthday wish that night was to find a boyfriend. After their initial meeting, a string of phone calls and dates ensued, leading Shamcey to eventually say yes a month later. In September 2011, she graced the Miss Universe stage, securing the 3rd runner-up position. Two years following their fateful encounter, the couple decided to embark on the journey of marriage. A decade later, Shamcey, now at the helm as the National Director of Miss Universe Philippines, and Lloyd, carving a successful path in the business landscape with various ventures, continue to flourish in their individual pursuits.
